New Jersey ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid New Jersey licence can be used in Greece for the vehicle categories covered by Greece’s U.S.-licence rule, subject to the Greek minimum age and matching licence entitlement. An International Driving Permit is not legally required for that visitor recognition, and no visitor translation is required under the U.S. clause. U.S. guidance says a Greek licence is required if the stay exceeds 185 days.
Greece and New Jersey are separate jurisdictions: Greece is a sovereign state, while New Jersey is a U.S. state whose driving licences are issued under U.S. state law. Greece does not need a New Jersey-specific bilateral agreement for this case. Article 98(3)(h) of Law 5209/2025 directly identifies licences issued by the United States and recognizes them during a stay for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars when the driver meets the minimum Greek age.
For a New Jersey holder, the home licence entitlement still controls what may be driven. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission describes the basic Class D licence as an automobile licence and treats motorcycle authority separately. Greek recognition therefore does not expand a Class D holder into a motorcycle category.
An IDP is not legally required by Greece for a valid New Jersey licence used within Article 98(3)(h). This is a legal exemption based on the current Greek Road Traffic Code, not merely a rental-company practice. USAGov nevertheless recommends carrying both the IDP and the state licence when driving abroad, and the State Department’s Greece guidance notes that an insurer may require both.
If the traveller chooses or needs an IDP, U.S. Department of State guidance identifies AAA and AATA as the authorized U.S. issuers and ties the U.S. IDP to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The IDP supplements the New Jersey licence and does not replace it.
The Greek statutory U.S.-licence rule applies during the holder’s stay. Current U.S. State Department country guidance gives the practical cutoff for U.S. travellers: a Greek licence is required if the stay exceeds 185 days. Greece’s National Registry of Administrative Public Services also provides a conversion procedure for a valid U.S. licence after acquisition of usual residence in Greece.
The resident conversion procedure is separate from visitor recognition and has additional documentary requirements, including official translation of the foreign licence. That translation requirement should not be carried back into the short-stay visitor rule, where Article 98(3)(h) does not impose it.
Rental policy is not the same as Greek driving law. The checked companies publish different rules for U.S. licence holders, so the supplier selected for the trip can change the documents needed at the counter.
| Company | Published requirement checked |
|---|---|
| Hertz Greece | Lists the United States among countries for which the national driving licence is required, without an IDP requirement. General rental terms require the licence to have been held for at least one year. |
| Enterprise, Kos Airport | States that U.S. licence holders do not require an IDP. The driver must present a full valid licence and valid identity document or passport, and the licence must have been held for at least one year. |
| Europcar | Its published FAQ says U.S. licence holders renting in Greece must present the international permit together with the domestic licence. |
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code requires drivers to carry the lawful driving licence and prescribed vehicle documents. In the general rule these include vehicle registration, proof of insurance and proof of road-tax payment, plus any special documents required for the case. For a rental or leasing vehicle, the code allows a copy of the registration and removes the obligation to carry proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt.
No checked authority states that Greek police routinely require an IDP from a visitor who is lawfully using a valid New Jersey licence under Article 98(3)(h). Insurance is a separate contractual issue: the U.S. State Department warns that an insurer may require both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. Check the actual policy rather than assuming the statutory IDP exemption settles insurance terms.
For a normal visitor driving a passenger car, carry the valid New Jersey licence and confirm that the licence category and age requirements are satisfied. An IDP is not a Greek legal requirement for this pair, but obtaining the official 1949 Geneva Convention IDP from AAA or AATA can satisfy a rental company or insurer that asks for one. Check those contract terms before booking. For a stay over 185 days or after acquiring usual residence, follow the Greek licence-conversion process.
