Montana ehliyeti ile Albania ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A holder of a valid Montana driving licence can drive in Albania, but current U.S. Department of State guidance says a U.S. driver must also carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) to legally drive or rent a car there. For a U.S.-issued permit, the applicable model is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Albania ties foreign-licence use to residence rather than a fixed visitor-day limit.
For a Montana traveller, the practical document set is the original valid Montana licence, a 1949 Geneva IDP obtained in the United States before travel, and a passport. U.S. guidance also says to carry vehicle registration or insurance documents. A separate Albanian translation is conditional rather than universally required when the foreign documents conform to the relevant international model.
Montana issues U.S. state driving licences, so the U.S.-specific Albania guidance applies to this licence holder. Article 133 of Albania's Road Code permits holders of foreign driving licences or international driving permits to drive vehicles for which their document is valid, provided they have not been resident in Albania for more than one year. The same article requires an official Albanian translation or equivalent document when the foreign licence or international permit does not conform to models established by international agreements in which Albania participates.
The Road Code does not provide a special Montana-only exemption. The pair-specific point is that this is a U.S. licence and must be read together with current U.S. government guidance for Albania.
The U.S. Department of State currently states that a traveller must have both a valid U.S. driving licence and an IDP to legally drive or rent a car in Albania, and says to obtain the IDP in the United States before travel. This is stronger than a recommendation for a Montana licence holder.
The United States is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, while Albania is a party to both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions. UNECE guidance on the prevailing convention says that when a driver comes from a country that is party only to the 1949 Convention and drives in a country party to both conventions, the 1949 Convention prevails. AAA also states that U.S. IDPs are issued under Article 24 of the 1949 Convention. The appropriate U.S. permit for this trip is therefore the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP.
Albania's general Road Code wording and the U.S. country guidance are not phrased identically. For this exact origin, follow the current U.S. Department of State guidance and carry both documents.
No fixed maximum number of visitor days was verified for the driving-licence rule. Albania's Road Code instead uses residence: foreign or international licence holders may drive while they have not been resident in Albania for more than one year. Because that condition is residence-based, max_visitor_days is left NULL.
DPSHTRR's current conversion procedure accepts a valid U.S. licence from an applicant who holds an Albanian residence permit with a term over one year. For U.S. licences, the procedure requires a certificate about the licence from the issuing authority with an apostille, plus notarisation and certified translation, in addition to the other conversion documents. A Montana licence holder moving to Albania should therefore treat conversion as a separate resident process rather than an extension of visitor use.
Legal driving requirements and rental-company desk rules are separate. U.S. Department of State guidance says the U.S. licence and IDP are both needed to legally rent in Albania, so a Montana traveller should bring both even where a rental company's own collection checklist is less strict.
| Company | Requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Sixt Albania | Country terms require a full valid licence held for at least two years and passport or identity card. An IDP is expressly required for licences printed in a non-Roman alphabet | Sixt Albania country-specific rental information |
| Enterprise Albania | Requires a valid home-country driving licence and passport and says an IDP may be required depending on the rental location | Enterprise Albania rental page |
These company terms are not Albanian law and they do not establish a single industry-wide rule.
Current U.S. Department of State guidance tells U.S. drivers in Albania to carry their passport, driving licence, IDP, and vehicle registration or insurance documents while driving. It also instructs drivers involved in a collision to call the police and remain for an official report, even for minor accidents, unless moving the vehicle is immediately necessary for safety.
For rental insurance, Sixt Albania's published terms include third-party insurance and state that protection can be affected if an unauthorised driver uses the vehicle or the driver does not possess the required licence. That is a rental contract condition, not a general statement about every Albanian insurance policy.
Article 133 limits driving to the vehicle categories for which the foreign licence or IDP is valid. It also requires any necessary professional competence certificate or other competence evidence for special vehicles where the issuing jurisdiction requires such documentation. No authoritative one-to-one mapping from Montana licence classes to Albanian categories was verified.
Translation is conditional. If the foreign licence or IDP does not match the models established by international agreements in which Albania participates, Albania's Road Code requires an official Albanian translation or equivalent document. Resident conversion has its own certified-translation requirements.
Take your original valid Montana licence and obtain a 1949 Geneva IDP in the United States before departure. Carry both with your passport and the vehicle's registration or insurance documents. Confirm the rental desk's age, licence-history, payment-card and document requirements before collection. If you establish residence in Albania, check the DPSHTRR conversion process promptly rather than relying on the foreign licence beyond the residence-based limit.
