Balearic Islands ehliyeti ile Barbados ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A current driving licence issued in the Balearic Islands is a Spanish national licence and is accepted under Barbados’ foreign-licence rules for the vehicle classes it authorises. Barbados abolished its separate Visitor Driving Permit in October 2025. A separate International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required by the reviewed Barbados rules, although Spain’s DGT advises one for travel outside the EU/EEA. A mandatory translation and the current maximum visitor-driving period could not be conclusively verified.
Use your valid Spanish licence for the class of vehicle you intend to drive. The Balearic Islands are part of Spain’s licensing system, not a separate IDP-issuing country. An IDP is supplementary and cannot replace the national licence.
Barbados’ Road Traffic Act recognises a driving licence issued by another jurisdiction, and the Barbados Revenue Authority’s October 2025 policy requires visitors to hold a valid licence. A licence issued in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera is treated as Spanish, not as a licence from a separate state. The relevant authorisation is the vehicle category shown on the licence, not the driver’s residence or island of issue.
Barbados’ published international-circulation rules allow a valid foreign domestic driving permit as an alternative to a convention driving permit. The 2025 Barbados Revenue Authority policy asks for a valid driving licence, not a separate IDP. Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), however, tells Spanish licence holders travelling outside the EU/EEA to obtain and carry an IDP, even where a national licence may be recognised. Spain and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, so the DGT-issued 1949 Geneva model is the relevant supplementary IDP. It is valid for one year and must be accompanied by the Spanish licence. Barbados has not published a confirmed translation requirement specific to Spanish-language licences: unverified – confirm with official authority.
The published Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order, 1960 refers to temporary visitors driving for 12 months from their last entry, provided their home licence covers the vehicle. That older provision also refers to a visitor-registration procedure abolished by the Barbados Revenue Authority effective 15 October 2025. The current effect of the 12-month limit after the change is not conclusively established, so no fixed day limit is stated here. Rules for someone becoming resident, including any exchange or local testing requirement, are unverified – confirm with official authority.
Under the Barbados Revenue Authority’s October 2025 policy, rental operators must check the validity of licences presented at booking or pickup. The visitor permit was replaced by a car rental levy of BBD 5 per rental day, capped at BBD 35 per rental contract. These are destination-wide rules, not special conditions for Balearic Islands licences.
| Company | Published requirements | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea Motors | Original valid foreign licence at delivery, held for at least three years. Drivers must be over 21 and under 80. Its October 2025 terms reflect the new levy. | Rental terms |
| M.A.H Car Rentals | National licence at delivery, held at least two years. It says an international licence is not required. Driver age 25 to 80. Some of its permit wording is outdated. | Hire terms |
Section 74 of the Road Traffic Act provides for a driver to produce a driving licence or government-issued identification card when requested by a police officer or uniformed transport inspector. If only identification is produced, the licence must be shown at the designated police station within 24 hours. Section 37 requires insurance or security covering third-party risks for the vehicle’s use. Rental insurance excesses and exclusions come from the particular contract, not from the Spanish licence’s place of issue.
A valid foreign licence does not authorise vehicle categories absent from that licence. The older international-circulation order refers to a minimum age of 18 for its temporary-visitor provision. Some Barbados government webpages still display the former paid Visitor Permit process, but the Barbados Revenue Authority’s dated 15 October 2025 policy explicitly abolishes that requirement. A rental company may impose stricter age, experience or medical-certificate conditions.
Carry your original valid Spanish licence, check that its category covers the vehicle, and obtain the DGT’s 1949 Geneva IDP before departure to follow Spain’s official overseas-driving advice. Do not apply for the abolished Barbados Visitor Driving Permit. Before paying for a rental, confirm the company’s age and licence-holding rules and whether it wants an IDP or translation, and check what the insurance covers.
Checked against the sources listed above on 2026-10-26. Barbados’ October 2025 cancellation of the Visitor Driving Permit is more recent than government webpages still showing the old application.
