Azores Islands ehliyeti ile Barbados ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Azores-issued Portuguese driving licence is recognised in Barbados for the vehicle classes it authorises. Barbados no longer requires a separate visitor driving permit, and its current general rules do not require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Canadian government travel advice recommends an IDP for licences not in English. A fixed visitor driving limit and a Barbados statutory translation requirement could not be verified.
The operative documents are your valid Portuguese licence and evidence that the vehicle is properly insured. An IDP can help with a non-English document but does not replace the national licence. The old two-month and one-year visitor-permit options are no longer in force.
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal, not a separate country issuing its own internationally distinct national licence. Barbados Road Traffic Act Cap. 295, section 2, includes driving authorisations issued by other jurisdictions in its definition of a driving licence. Section 61 permits driving only the vehicle class for which that licence is valid. This provides the relevant basis for using a valid Azores-issued Portuguese licence rather than any special bilateral Azores agreement.
A Portuguese category B entitlement ordinarily relates to passenger cars. It is not permission to operate motorcycles, goods vehicles or commercial passenger services outside the classes authorised by the licence. A Barbados-specific class-by-class equivalence list for Portuguese licences was not verified.
The Road Traffic Act and the Barbados Revenue Authority policy of October 2025 require a valid national driving licence but do not impose a general IDP requirement on this visitor. The Government of Canada separately advises carrying an IDP where a licence is not in English. That advice is precautionary and is not a Barbados legal translation rule.
United Nations treaty records list Portugal and Barbados as parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Portugal is also party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, while Barbados is not listed as a party to that convention. The relevant shared IDP model, if one is obtained, is therefore the 1949 Geneva model. Portugal's Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes says its IDP lasts up to one year and must accompany the original licence. Whether Barbados requires a certified Portuguese-to-English translation is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The Barbados Revenue Authority abolished the Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025. It did not replace the permit with a published fixed maximum number of days for all foreign-licence holders. The earlier two-month and one-year permit periods should not be treated as present-day driving limits. A defined maximum visitor period for an Azores-issued licence is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The reviewed sources did not establish when a new Barbados resident must obtain a local licence or whether a Portuguese licence can be exchanged without testing. Those questions need a decision from the Barbados Licensing Authority before relying on visitor arrangements after taking up residence.
The Revenue Authority requires car rental operators to check that the licence presented at booking or pickup is valid and current. Company conditions differ and are separate from the traffic law. The authority also introduced a rental levy of BBD $5 per day, capped at BBD $35 for each contract.
| Company | Published conditions | Terms checked |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea Motors | Original valid Barbados or foreign licence at delivery, held for at least three years, driver over 21 and under 80 | Chelsea Motors terms |
| SunCars / Drive-A-Matic | Original home-country licence, held at least two years, driver over 25, maximum age 80 | SunCars terms |
Neither set of terms proves that all rental providers accept every language and format without further documentation. Ask the chosen company before arrival, especially if relying on a Portuguese-only licence without an IDP.
Section 74 of the Road Traffic Act allows police officers and uniformed transport inspectors to ask for a driving licence or government-issued identification card. If identification is shown instead, the licence must be produced at the designated police station within 24 hours. Carry the original Portuguese licence in the vehicle.
Section 37 requires compliant cover against third-party risks for the person using the vehicle. Chelsea Motors states that its rental includes comprehensive insurance and third-party liability, subject to contractual excesses and damage-waiver exclusions. Check that you are an authorised driver and understand the cover actually provided.
Some Barbados government pages still instruct visitors to buy a visitor driving permit. The Barbados Revenue Authority's later, explicit abolition notice supersedes those instructions from 15 October 2025. There is no separately verified exemption or extra visitor-permit rule for licences issued in the Azores.
Chelsea Motors requires drivers aged 75 to 79 to supply a recent medical certificate and imposes a separate deposit for those drivers. That is a named rental policy, not proof of a uniform age restriction applying to every visitor. Ordinary foreign-licence recognition does not cover learner-only documents.
Bring the current original licence issued in the Azores, use only the vehicle classes it covers, and check third-party cover for you as a named driver. An IDP is not generally compulsory, but the Geneva 1949 document may be worthwhile for Portuguese-language documentation. Check the rental operator's acceptance rules before paying and ask the Barbados Licensing Authority about residency or an unusually long stay.
The sources listed above were checked on 2026-10-26. The 15 October 2025 visitor-permit abolition is an effective date, not the date this guide was checked. Translation treatment, a fixed visitor limit and resident exchange conditions remain unverified – confirm with official authority.
