Oman ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A visitor with an Oman driving licence can drive in Greece where the licence qualifies for recognition under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Greece also accepts a valid international driving permit for drivers without normal residence in Greece. Because current Oman-licence conformity with Vienna Annex 6 was not independently verified, carrying a 1968 Vienna Convention IDP with the national licence is the clearest option and is also required by major rental companies checked.
Oman and Greece are both parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. A national licence conforming to Convention Annex 6 is recognised for the vehicle categories it covers. Greece separately accepts a valid international driving permit held by a person without normal residence in Greece. There is no verified fixed visitor-day limit in the rule checked because recognition is linked instead to normal residence.
Article 98 of Greece's current Road Traffic Code permits holders of valid licences recognised under ratified international conventions to drive when they do not have normal residence in Greece. Oman acceded to the 1968 Vienna Convention on 9 June 2020 and it entered into force for Oman on 9 June 2021. Greece acceded to the same Convention in 1986. The Convention requires recognition of a valid domestic permit conforming to Annex 6. The present format of an Oman licence was not independently verified against every Annex 6 requirement, so licence-only recognition should be treated as conditional.
An IDP is not automatically mandatory where the Oman national licence itself satisfies the Vienna Convention recognition conditions. Greece nevertheless provides an independent legal route for a valid international driving permit held by a non-resident, and the Vienna Convention recognises an Annex 7 IDP when presented with the corresponding domestic licence. The applicable model for Oman is the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP. The Oman Automobile Association, the identified Oman IDP issuer, tells Omani nationals and residents wishing to drive abroad to obtain an IDP and to carry it with their national licence.
No fixed maximum visitor period was verified. The relevant Greek provisions instead depend on the holder not having normal residence in Greece, and the Vienna Convention states that permits issued by one contracting party are recognised in another until that territory becomes the holder's normal residence. Once Greece becomes the holder's normal residence, the visitor recognition routes described here should no longer be relied upon. An Oman-specific exchange or conversion entitlement was not verified.
Rental policy is stricter than the minimum legal analysis. Enterprise Greece lists countries whose national licences it accepts without an IDP and Oman is not among them, so its published rule for all other countries requires a valid IDP with the national licence. Avis Greece states that drivers need an EU licence or an international driving permit and requires the IDP to accompany the national licence. Hertz Greece places countries not included in its national-licence or translation groups under a national-plus-international-licence requirement, and Oman is not in its listed exceptions. These are contractual rental requirements rather than Greek driving law.
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code requires a driver to carry the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, road-tax proof and any documents required for the vehicle category. For a rented or leased vehicle, the Code provides that only a copy of the registration need be carried and removes the requirement to carry proof of insurance and road-tax payment. If relying on a Vienna IDP, carry the IDP together with the corresponding Oman licence. No Oman-specific rule changing insurance validity was verified.
Recognition covers only vehicle categories shown on the valid permit. The Vienna Convention permits contracting states to refuse recognition for drivers under 18 and, for categories C, D, CE and DE, for drivers under 21. Learner permits are outside the Convention recognition rule. Translation requirements for an Oman national licence used without an IDP remain unverified, so carrying the IDP is the more reliable document combination.
Obtain the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP from the Oman Automobile Association before travelling and keep it with the original valid Oman licence. This gives a clear recognised document combination under the Convention and meets the published requirements of the major rental companies checked. Confirm any additional vehicle-category or age conditions with the rental company before collection.
