Malaysia ehliyeti ile New Zealand ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A current and valid Malaysia driving licence can be used in New Zealand under NZTA's overseas-licence rules. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not independently required when the licence is in English. If it is not in English, you must also carry an accurate English translation or an acceptable IDP. As of 26 September 2026, the car-licence limit is 18 months from last entry, changing to 12 months on 1 November 2026.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Licence recognition | Yes, if the overseas licence is current and valid and NZTA conditions are met |
| Vehicle categories | You may drive vehicles your overseas licence authorises. A full car licence covers a car or light vehicle up to 6000kg gross laden weight |
| IDP legal status | Not required when the licence is in English. If it is not in English, an accurate English translation or an IDP is required |
| IDP recommendation | No separate official recommendation was verified. NZTA treats an IDP as an alternative to an English translation for a non-English licence |
| IDP model | 1949 Geneva Convention. JPJ lists both Malaysia and New Zealand under that convention |
| Translation | Required only if the licence is not in English, unless an acceptable IDP is carried instead |
| Visitor period | Car licence: up to 18 months from last entry until 31 October 2026, then 12 months from 1 November 2026. Motorcycle and truck licences: 12 months |
| Rental requirements | unverified – confirm with official authority |
| Police or authority documents | Carry the current overseas licence. If it is not in English, also carry an accurate English translation or qualifying IDP |
| Insurance | unverified – confirm with official authority |
| Key exception | Malaysia is a non-exempt country for New Zealand licence conversion, so conversion normally requires theory and practical tests |
NZTA permits driving on a current and valid overseas licence if the driver has not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand and has not been issued a New Zealand driver licence since last entering. You may drive vehicles authorised by the overseas licence. A full overseas car licence permits a car or light vehicle up to 6000kg gross laden weight. Malaysia does not appear on NZTA's exempt-country list, so it is treated as a non-exempt country for conversion.
NZTA does not require an IDP merely because the licence was issued in Malaysia. The language of the licence is decisive: if the licence is not in English, an accurate English translation or an IDP must accompany it. NZTA accepts an IDP issued under a United Nations road-traffic convention as a translation. JPJ publishes Malaysia and New Zealand in its country list for the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and issues IDPs to eligible Malaysian Competent Driving Licence holders. JPJ states that its IDP is valid for one year.
On the verification date, an overseas car licence can be used for up to 18 months from the driver's last entry into New Zealand. From 1 November 2026, the car limit reduces to 12 months from the last entry. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences are already limited to 12 months. If you need to keep driving after the applicable period, you must obtain a New Zealand licence. Malaysia is non-exempt for conversion, and NZTA states that non-exempt applicants must pass theory and practical tests.
No named rental-company policy was verified for this pair. Rental requirements are separate from New Zealand's legal permission to drive, so check the chosen company's current terms before collection. unverified – confirm with official authority
Carry the current overseas licence while driving. If it is not in English, also carry an accurate English translation or acceptable IDP. An IDP does not replace the underlying licence. Current pair-specific insurance conditions were not verified, so insurance is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The permitted period depends on vehicle class and, for car licences, the date. Learner, restricted or provisional overseas licences can also carry different vehicle limits. Commercial or passenger-service driving may require New Zealand endorsements and is outside the ordinary visitor-driving rule.
Take the current physical Malaysia licence. If any operative licence information is not in English, carry an NZTA-acceptable translation or the applicable 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Because the car-licence time limit changes on 1 November 2026, use the rule that applies during your stay. Check the rental company's own documentation rules separately.
This information was checked against the official sources listed above on 2026-09-26. Rules can change, especially the overseas car-licence period scheduled to change on 1 November 2026.
