Malaysia ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A visitor holding a valid Malaysia driving licence can drive in Greece under the 1949 Geneva Convention recognition route, provided the licence covers the vehicle category, the driver meets the applicable minimum age and Greece is not the driver's normal residence. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a separate legal requirement under this recognition route, but rental companies may require one.
Malaysia and Greece are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Current Greek law exempts holders of valid licences recognised under ratified international conventions from the requirement to hold a Greek licence when they do not have normal residence in Greece. No fixed visitor-day limit was verified for this route.
Article 98 of Greece's Road Traffic Code, Law 5209/2025, recognises valid licences under international conventions or agreements ratified by Greek law where the holder does not have normal residence in Greece. The United Nations Treaty Collection records Malaysia's accession to the 1949 Convention on 10 September 1958 and lists Greece as a party. Recognition is limited to the vehicle category or categories for which the driver is properly licensed.
The checked Greek rule provides a Convention-based route for the national licence itself, so a qualifying Malaysia licence does not separately require an IDP for legal recognition. Greece also recognises a valid international driving permit issued by another state for a person without normal residence in Greece. Malaysia's Road Transport Department issues IDPs and Malaysia participates in the 1949 Geneva Convention, making the relevant Malaysian permit the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. No separate Greek government recommendation requiring Malaysia visitors to obtain an IDP was verified.
The relevant Greek provision is based on normal residence rather than a verified fixed number of visitor days, so no numerical maximum is stated here. The Convention-based exception expressly concerns a holder who does not have normal residence in Greece. If Greece becomes the holder's normal residence, the visitor recognition basis no longer applies. A specific simplified exchange route or fixed conversion deadline for Malaysia licences was not verified, so resident conversion details are unverified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policy is separate from driving law. SIXT's published Greece rental information requires licences issued outside the European Union to be complemented by an international driving licence and requires the renter and approved drivers to present a full valid licence with identification. A Malaysia licence holder renting from SIXT should therefore bring the original licence and a valid IDP even though the Convention-based legal recognition route does not itself establish a separate IDP requirement.
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code requires drivers to carry the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, road-tax evidence and category-specific documents where applicable. For vehicles rented from car-rental or leasing companies, the law provides a document exception: a copy of the registration is carried and proof of insurance and road-tax payment do not have to be carried. No checked authoritative source established that absence of an IDP automatically invalidates insurance for this licence pair.
The licence must be valid, cover the relevant vehicle category and the driver must meet Greece's minimum age for that category. The Convention-based recognition provision applies only while the holder does not have normal residence in Greece. Rental companies can impose documentation conditions that are stricter than the legal minimum.
Carry the original valid Malaysia licence whenever driving. For a rental trip, obtain a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP from Malaysia's Road Transport Department and carry it with the national licence, because rental-company documentation rules may be stricter than the Greek legal recognition rule. Confirm the chosen rental company's terms before collection.
