Guide to driving in Belgium with a West Virginia licence.
A valid full West Virginia licence is recognised for short visits to Belgium for drivers aged 18 or over, within their vehicle entitlement. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a separate legal requirement for a recognised national licence, but US government guidance recommends carrying one. The US-issued permit follows the 1949 Geneva model. No separate visitor translation requirement was identified. Belgium's 185-day rule concerns registration as a resident, not every tourist stay.
For an ordinary passenger car, West Virginia Class E is the relevant licence. Carry the physical national licence and check your rental provider's terms before departure. An IDP is recommended, not an additional legal driving qualification.
West Virginia is a US state, so its licence is issued under the US licensing system rather than a separate West Virginia treaty. The Belgian Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport recognises qualifying non-European licences and names West Virginia in its official US category-equivalence schedule. The US Department of State separately confirms that adults aged 18 or older with a valid US licence may drive in Belgium as tourists or short-term visitors.
The West Virginia DMV defines Class E as the passenger-vehicle licence. Belgium's equivalence schedule maps that class to Belgian category B for the purpose of exchange. Those administrative exchange mappings should not be mistaken for unlimited visitor vehicle entitlements.
Belgian federal guidance permits driving with a valid recognised non-European national licence. It does not impose an additional IDP on a visitor using such a licence. USAGov nevertheless advises US travellers to carry both their national licence and an IDP, and the permit provides a multilingual translation.
The relevant US-issued document is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, not a 1968 Vienna model. United Nations treaty records show Belgium and the United States as parties to the 1949 convention. USAGov identifies the American Automobile Association (AAA) and American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) as the authorised US issuers. The IDP supplements, rather than replaces, the West Virginia licence.
The Belgian authority does not identify a separate certified-translation obligation for a visitor presenting a valid recognised West Virginia licence. A sworn translation can, however, be requested by the municipality when exchanging a non-European licence after taking up residence.
Belgium's 185-day period is tied to registration in Belgium. A short-term tourist is not automatically given a separate 185-day driving allowance measured from arrival, so no fixed tourist maximum is stated here.
After registering as a resident, a holder of a recognised non-European licence may drive with it during the first 185 days of registration. After that, a Belgian licence is required. A resident can begin the exchange process before day 185, but a Belgian licence cannot be issued until the residence threshold is met. Exchange requires an accepted licence model, a valid original licence, proof of eligibility and an authenticity check. A municipality may request a sworn translation. If exchange is unavailable, Belgian theoretical and practical tests are required.
Europcar's published policy says holders of US licences may rent at its Belgian branches. For this case the company does not make an IDP compulsory, although it strongly recommends one. Its policy requires original physical documents at the counter rather than a photograph or digital-only permit.
These are terms of one named company, not a general legal requirement or a guarantee of acceptance by every rental desk. Confirm the booking's driver-age, licence and payment conditions directly with the provider.
Belgian police guidance identifies the original driving licence, vehicle registration certificate and evidence of motor insurance among documents drivers must be able to produce. Keep the physical West Virginia licence available. An IDP, if carried, must accompany the original national licence.
Belgian government guidance requires at least third-party motor liability insurance and proof of insurance in the vehicle. This rule applies regardless of which US state issued the licence. Whether an existing US policy provides the necessary cover abroad depends on the actual policy and was not established by the government sources reviewed.
The federal equivalence schedule contains a specific West Virginia entry for resident licence exchange. It maps Classes B, C, D and E to Belgian B. Class A may map to Belgian B, BE, C1, C1E, C and CE, subject to verification of the relevant conditions. The same letter does not mean the same entitlement in both jurisdictions. West Virginia Class A is commercial, whereas Belgian category A concerns motorcycles.
West Virginia Class F is a motorcycle-only licence. The Belgian schedule gives it no exchange equivalent, so do not infer Belgian motorcycle recognition from the car-licence mapping. Short-visit motorcycle entitlement for an F-only licence or an F endorsement is unverified – confirm with official authority before riding. Ordinary car visitors should also not rely on learner permits or expired licences.
For a short stay in a passenger car, bring the original valid West Virginia Class E licence. Obtain a 1949 Geneva IDP from an authorised US issuer if practical, particularly for rental documentation, but do not treat that recommendation as a Belgian legal mandate. Confirm the specific rental terms and required insurance evidence. If moving to Belgium, begin the local exchange enquiry well before the 185-day registration point.
The authorities, issuer information and rental policy listed above were checked on 2026-10-27. This is a verification date, not a claim that the rules changed on that day.
