Guide to driving in Bahrain with a West Virginia licence.
A valid West Virginia passenger-car licence can be used for private-car driving in Bahrain if the General Directorate of Traffic approves it, for up to three months after entry. The U.S. Department of State recommends an International Driving Permit (IDP), while Bahrain's published visitor-stamping procedure requires one alongside the original licence. The U.S. permit follows the 1949 Geneva Convention. A separate translation obligation for the English-language licence could not be verified.
The legal permission to drive and the rental counter's document checks are different. Bahrain's traffic authority decides whether to approve the foreign private-car licence. SIXT Bahrain separately requires an IDP from foreign renters.
West Virginia is a U.S. state, not a separate treaty country. The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles classifies its standard Class E licence as a passenger-vehicle licence. Bahrain's implementing regulations, Article 251, allow the General Directorate of Traffic to approve private-car licences issued outside the Gulf Cooperation Council for private-car driving. The wording gives the Directorate discretion and does not make every foreign licence automatically valid. The U.S. Department of State nevertheless expressly describes a valid U.S. licence as necessary for driving in Bahrain.
The State Department recommends an IDP rather than describing it as universally mandatory. Bahrain's official service for stamping foreign international licences for nonresident visitors lists both a valid original international licence and a valid original private-car licence as conditions. Under Article 295, a holder of a foreign IDP must present it to the traffic authority for review and registration. Tourists and transit travellers may use it on arrival but must present it the next day. The regulation also permits the authority to delegate approval to rental firms.
The relevant U.S.-issued document is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. United Nations treaty records show the United States is a party and Bahrain acceded in March 2025, effective April 2025. Bahrain is also a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, but that does not turn a U.S. IDP into a 1968-model permit. AAA issues U.S. IDPs as translations supplementing, not replacing, the original state licence.
For an additional certified or official translation of the English-language West Virginia licence: unverified – confirm with official authority. The IDP itself supplies multilingual translations.
Article 251 permits approval of a non-GCC private-car licence for a maximum of three months from the date of entry, expressly regardless of the person's residence status. It is an approval-dependent maximum, not a guaranteed 90-day allowance. Anyone wanting to drive on after that period must apply for a Bahraini driving licence under the applicable procedures.
Bahrain publishes separate services for evaluating foreign licences and replacing licences from recognised countries. These require a valid foreign licence and other checks, including a vision test. The published information reviewed does not establish that a West Virginia licence qualifies for automatic exchange without testing, so eligibility should be checked with the General Directorate of Traffic.
SIXT Bahrain states that foreign renters need an IDP as well as a valid licence held for at least one year and a passport or identity card. It sets a minimum age of 18, applies a young-driver surcharge below 21, and may impose a higher minimum age for some vehicle groups. These are rental conditions, not an official IDP rule for every driver or every rental firm.

Bahrain Traffic Law Article 26 requires carrying the driving licence and producing it when requested by traffic or public-security officers, along with access to the vehicle documents that must be retained. For its stamping service, the General Directorate of Traffic lists the original foreign international and private licences, a passport and residence information. The U.S. Department of State says accident reports may require an identity document, driving licence and mobile number.
Insurance terms depend on the policy. The State Department warns that after a major crash moving the vehicle before a police report is filed may cause insurers to deny coverage. SIXT offers optional insurance or protection products to reduce liability, but buying those extras is not described as mandatory on its Bahrain page. Check the applicable vehicle policy rather than assuming U.S. coverage carries over.
Bahrain's Article 251 is about private-car licences. A West Virginia Class E licence does not itself establish motorcycle eligibility, for which West Virginia uses a motorcycle endorsement or Class F licence. Bahrain Article 252 provides separate treatment for foreign private-transport licences. A rental company's willingness to hand over a vehicle cannot expand the vehicle categories authorised by the driving licence or the traffic authority.
Bring the original valid Class E licence, obtain a U.S. 1949-model IDP before travel, and clarify the General Directorate of Traffic approval or stamping process before driving. Article 295 includes a next-day presentation rule for visiting IDP holders, so ask whether the rental branch can handle approval or whether you must attend the traffic office. If staying beyond three months, arrange a Bahraini licence rather than relying on either U.S. document alone.
