Guide to driving in Sicily with a Washington licence.
Yes. A visitor with a valid Washington State driver's licence may drive in Sicily in vehicle categories covered by that licence, provided the original licence is accompanied by either a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official Italian translation. An IDP is therefore not the only legal option, but US authorities advise obtaining one. Italy's one-year limit concerns residence, not a universal one-year tourist allowance.
Sicily is part of Italy, so Italian national road-traffic law applies. A Washington licence is a US, non-EU/EEA licence. For a typical car hire, take your physical licence and a US-issued 1949 IDP, rather than assuming English wording on the licence is enough.
Article 135 of the Italian Road Code permits holders of valid non-EU/EEA licences to drive vehicles their licence authorises, provided they meet the residence and accompanying-document conditions. A full Washington licence can therefore be used for an ordinary passenger car. Motorcycle or other vehicle classes require the applicable entitlement. Washington lists motorcycle endorsements separately and restrictions remain relevant.
Under Article 135, you must have the original valid Washington licence plus either a valid IDP or an official translation into Italian. Thus an IDP is required when you have no qualifying official translation, but is not legally compulsory in addition to one. A licence printed in English does not by itself remove this requirement. The relevant US-issued document is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, supported by the US and Italian participation in that convention. USAGov identifies AAA and AATA as authorised issuers and says US IDPs last one year. The US Department of State advises obtaining an IDP before international travel.
Italian authorities specify that an official translation must be a complete Italian translation certified as corresponding to the foreign text, through an accepted official or sworn process. An informal translation is not the statutory alternative.
The licence-specific one-year clock begins when a person acquires residence in Italy. Article 135 does not set a fixed maximum number of tourist driving days independent of immigration permission. After more than one year of Italian residence, the Washington licence and IDP or translation no longer suffice. The Italian transport ministry lists US licence conversion only for diplomatic personnel and their families, not ordinary US residents. A non-eligible resident must obtain an Italian licence through the applicable examination procedure.
Rental desk policy is separate from Italian driving law. The researched companies do not state identical documentary requirements. In particular, Hertz Palermo Airport says US licence holders can present a national licence and passport at pick-up without an IDP. That counter policy is not a legal exemption from Article 135, which still requires an IDP or official Italian translation when driving. Check the rules of the booked branch and vehicle class.

A driver relying on a Washington licence must have the original valid licence and the IDP or official Italian translation required by Article 135 available when driving. An IDP alone is not a substitute for the state licence. Italian Road Code Article 193 requires third-party motor liability cover for vehicles on public roads. The sources checked do not establish that an omitted IDP automatically cancels a particular rental or private insurance policy. Review the actual contract and any excess or coverage exclusions.
There is no separate Sicily-issued IDP rule, and a Washington motorcycle endorsement is not a blanket authorisation for every vehicle category in Italy. A learner's permit or digital-only licence should not be assumed acceptable for rental: SIXT explicitly excludes these documents. The limited US diplomatic licence-conversion arrangement applies only to eligible personnel and family members, not ordinary residents.
Before leaving Washington, obtain a genuine 1949-convention IDP from AAA or AATA. Bring it with your current physical Washington licence and passport. Alternatively, arrange a qualifying official Italian translation. Confirm your particular rental company's age, licence-holding period, vehicle eligibility, payment and insurance terms before paying.
