Guide to driving in New Zealand with a Togo licence.
A current and valid Togo driving licence can be used in New Zealand under the rules for overseas licences. An IDP is not independently required by NZTA, but if the licence is not in English you must carry an accurate English translation or an acceptable IDP. On 26 September 2026, the car-licence limit is 18 months from last entry, changing to 12 months on 1 November 2026.
The Togo licence follows New Zealand rules for overseas licences. Keep the original licence with you. Translation requirements depend on the language of the licence, and rental-company documentation rules may be stricter than the legal minimum.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi states that a person can drive without a New Zealand licence when they hold a current and valid overseas licence or permit, have not been suspended or disqualified in New Zealand, and have not received a New Zealand driver licence since their last entry. Togo is not given a separate exclusion, so these general overseas-licence rules apply.
A full overseas car licence permits driving a car or light vehicle subject to the New Zealand class 1 limit of 6000 kg gross laden weight. A full overseas motorcycle licence corresponds to New Zealand class 6. Learner, restricted, provisional and heavy-vehicle entitlements are subject to additional limits and New Zealand class rules.
New Zealand law and NZTA guidance do not make an IDP independently mandatory for a driver who otherwise satisfies the overseas-licence requirements. If the licence is not in English, however, an accurate English translation or an acceptable IDP must accompany it. The IDP is a translation document and does not replace the national licence.
The United Nations treaty record shows both Togo and New Zealand as parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Togo also officially issues international driving permits through its Direction des Transports Routiers et Ferroviaires. The exact convention model of the current Togo-issued IDP that should be used for New Zealand was not established from the current issuing information, so the model is unverified – confirm with official authority.
As checked on 26 September 2026, an overseas car licence can currently be used for up to 18 months from the date the driver last entered New Zealand. NZTA has announced that this car-licence limit will reduce to 12 months from 1 November 2026. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences are limited to 12 months. Because the permitted period differs by vehicle class and is expressed from the last entry date, no single fixed max_visitor_days value is used.
NZTA advises people staying in New Zealand to obtain a New Zealand licence. Togo is not on the NZTA list of exempt countries, so a Togo licence is treated as a non-exempt-country licence when converting.
Rental-company rules are contractual requirements and are separate from the legal right to drive. Avis New Zealand states that drivers must hold a current and valid licence and its published reservation terms require a valid IDP with licences not printed in English. Budget New Zealand publishes comparable requirements for non-English licences. These policies should be checked against the specific booking before collection.
NZTA says the driver licence must be carried while driving. If the overseas licence is not in English, the driver must also carry the required accurate English translation. An acceptable IDP may serve as that translation but must be accompanied by the national licence.
No Togo-specific insurance condition linked to use of the licence or an IDP was verified. Insurance requirements should therefore be checked against the applicable insurer or rental contract rather than inferred from the licensing rules.
The overseas licence must be current and valid. The overseas-licence entitlement does not apply if the driver has been suspended or disqualified in New Zealand or has received a New Zealand driver licence since the last entry. New Zealand vehicle-class and weight limits also apply even where the overseas licence permits a broader entitlement.
Travel with the original current Togo licence. If it is not in English, obtain an NZTA-acceptable English translation or an acceptable IDP before driving. Check the rental company separately because a company may specifically require an IDP even where New Zealand law accepts another approved translation.
This information was checked against the listed sources on 26 September 2026. The car-licence time limit is already scheduled to change on 1 November 2026, so travellers driving after that date should apply the new 12-month limit.
