Guide to driving in Belgium with a Sicily licence.
A full, valid driving licence issued in Sicily is an Italian EU licence and is recognised in Belgium for its authorised categories. An International Driving Permit (IDP) and translation are not legally required. No official recommendation to carry an IDP for this route was found. Visitors have no fixed licence-based day limit, provided the Italian licence remains valid and Belgian age and category rules are met.
A licence issued in Sicily belongs to Italy’s national licensing system, so Belgium applies the normal EU recognition rules.
Belgium’s Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport permits driving on public roads with a valid EU or EEA national licence. Because Sicily is in Italy, this covers a full Italian licence issued there. The EU recognises categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, B1, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, but a driver may use only the categories actually granted on their licence. Belgian minimum ages still apply.
No IDP or official translation is required for ordinary driving with a valid Italian EU licence. The authorities checked do not issue a separate recommendation to obtain an IDP for this journey. Italy can issue permits under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna models through its motoring authorities, but neither model applies as an additional requirement for Sicily to Belgium. The translation rules mentioned in Belgian guidance for some non-EU licences do not apply to this Italian EU licence.
The Belgian authority allows holders of valid EU licences to continue driving while the licence remains valid. Its 185-day registration provisions for non-EU licences are not a visitor time limit for Italian licences, so there is no fixed maximum to put in days.
If you register as resident in Belgium, you normally keep using your valid Italian licence. Exchange becomes mandatory in specified cases, including loss, theft or damage, or within two years of Belgian registration if the licence has no administrative expiry date. The authority also specifies exchange following certain traffic offences involving a temporary Belgian licence. Exchange is handled by the municipality where you are registered.
Legal recognition does not guarantee a particular rental booking. The following published policies accept EU-issued licences without imposing an IDP, but each company can set minimum driver ages, licence-holding periods and vehicle-group restrictions.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| SIXT | EU/EEA licences accepted without IDP or translation. Present the original licence. | Help centre |
| Europcar Belgium | EU licence holders do not need an IDP. Original licence must have been held at least one year. | Belgium FAQ |
| Avis Belgium | For a European-issued licence used in Europe, no IDP condition is listed. Bring the licence, identification and booking payment card. | Belgium rental guidance |
Belgian police guidance calls for the original valid licence and identifies the vehicle registration, insurance certificate and inspection certificate, where applicable. For an Italian-registered vehicle, EU guidance says the home insurance policy covers third-party liability in Belgium. Carrying the insurance documents is prudent. A rental vehicle must have third-party liability cover, while optional cover and the damage excess are contractual matters.
EU authorities do not recognise provisional licences for driving across borders. An EU example specifically notes that a 14-year-old with an Italian moped entitlement cannot drive a moped in Belgium until age 16. A licence issued in exchange for a non-EU licence may need special review on a later change of residence. None of these exceptions creates a general IDP requirement for a full Italian licence.
Use the original, valid Italian licence issued in Sicily and check that the vehicle category and any applicable age conditions match your plans. Do not buy an IDP solely for an ordinary visit to Belgium. For car hire, check the chosen vehicle group and bring the original licence, identity document and required payment card. If moving to Belgium, ask your municipality about exchange requirements as your licence approaches expiry or if it is lost, stolen or damaged.
