Guide to driving in Bahrain with a Sicily licence.
Yes, a valid Italian driving licence issued in Sicily can be accepted for private-car driving in Bahrain, but the Bahraini Traffic Directorate must approve it and the national-licence permission lasts at most three months from entry. Italian official advice covers hired cars. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not an unequivocal legal prerequisite under that approval provision, although Bahrain tourism guidance says to carry one. A separate translation requirement could not be confirmed.
For a short rental, the practical test is approval of the Italian licence and compliance with the chosen rental company's documentation policy. The two are not interchangeable.
Sicily is part of Italy, so there is no separate Sicilian national driving-licence treaty. Article 251 of Bahrain's Traffic Regulations allows the General Directorate of Traffic to approve non-GCC licences for private passenger cars for no more than three months from the date of entry. Italy's foreign ministry also says an Italian licence can be used in a hired vehicle for up to three months. The authorisation is conditional, not automatic. A category for motorcycles, buses or commercial vehicles must not be inferred from this private-car rule.
Bahrain's official tourism site says visitors with non-GCC licences need their home licence and an IDP. The actual private-car rule in Article 251 permits approved foreign national licences without expressly requiring an IDP, and Italian official travel guidance contemplates driving a hire car on the Italian licence for up to three months. Because these official descriptions differ, check the Traffic Directorate's current interpretation before relying on the national licence alone. Carrying an IDP is the safer documented approach. Both Italy and Bahrain are parties to the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna road-traffic conventions, and the Italian transport ministry lists Bahrain for both IDP models. The Italian licence must accompany either permit. A separate certified-translation obligation is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Article 251 sets a maximum of three calendar months from arrival for an approved foreign private-car licence, irrespective of the traveller's residence status, and directs those wishing to drive afterwards to obtain a Bahraini licence. Do not treat that as a fixed 90-day allowance or an extension of immigration permission. Italy's Bahrain travel advice says that a citizen taking up work may use an Italian licence while residency formalities are completed, for no longer than three months, and should subsequently obtain a Bahraini licence. Bahrain offers foreign-licence evaluation and replacement services, but acceptance for conversion or any testing exemption has not been confirmed for an individual Sicily-issued licence.
| Company | Published policy relevant to Italian licences | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Avis Bahrain | Italy is expressly exempt from its non-resident IDP rule. Original licence held for at least one year. Listed vehicle groups have a 25-year minimum age. | Avis Bahrain terms |
| SelfDrive Bahrain | International travellers are asked for their home licence, IDP, passport, residence-country ID and payment card. | SelfDrive FAQ |
Neither company's document policy replaces the Directorate's licence-approval process. Avis also says the licence's issuing country should match the passport or residence-permit issuing country.
Bahrain's government lists an original foreign private-car licence, an original international licence, passport and residence information for its visitor licence-stamping service. Article 295 requires a foreign IDP to be shown to the Traffic Directorate before use, but lets tourists or transit travellers use it on arrival if they present it the following day. The Directorate may delegate endorsement to rental firms. Australian government travel advice also tells motorists to carry their licence and vehicle registration card. Italy's official country sheet says third-party motor liability insurance is compulsory. Avis Bahrain says its vehicles include third-party coverage and specifies a mandatory collision damage waiver and a police report for claims. No official source checked establishes automatic loss of cover solely for not carrying an IDP.
A Sicily-issued licence is Italian, not Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) issued, so the GCC licensing exception does not apply. The private-car recognition rule does not establish permission for every Italian licence category. Avis explicitly exempts Italy from its own visitor IDP condition, but SelfDrive does not. This genuine company difference should not be presented as a national-law exemption.
Confirm foreign-licence endorsement with the General Directorate of Traffic and the hire company before driving. An Italian IDP is sensible even when a rental firm such as Avis exempts Italian licences, because Bahrain's tourism guidance and administrative approval requirements must also be considered. In Sicily, the regional Motorizzazione Civile publishes the IDP application route. Take the original Italian licence, the applicable IDP and passport, and arrange Bahraini licensing rather than assuming a visitor arrangement continues once you settle there.
Sources and their stated requirements were checked on 2026-10-24. The Italian ministry PDF is dated earlier in 2026 and its printed validity period has passed, so any discrepancy should be resolved with Bahrain's General Directorate of Traffic before travel.
