Guide to driving in New Zealand with a Sardinia licence.
A current Italian driving licence issued to a holder in Sardinia can be used in New Zealand under the rules for overseas licences. Because an Italian licence is not in English, the driver must also carry an accurate English translation or an accepted International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is not separately mandatory when an acceptable translation is carried. On 26 September 2026 the overseas car-licence limit is 18 months from the last entry, changing to 12 months on 1 November 2026.
Sardinia is an Italian region, so there is no separate Sardinian national licence regime to assess. The relevant document is the Italian driving licence. New Zealand permits qualifying overseas licence holders to drive the vehicles their licence authorises, subject to validity, translation and time-limit conditions.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi states that a person may drive without a New Zealand licence when they hold a current and valid overseas licence, have not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand and have not been given a New Zealand licence since their last entry. The Italian Embassy in Wellington also states that an Italian licence may be used in New Zealand with an English translation. For a full overseas car licence, NZTA states that the holder may drive a car or light vehicle with a gross laden weight of up to 6000 kg. Other vehicle entitlements depend on the classes held on the overseas licence.
New Zealand does not make an IDP independently compulsory for an Italian licence holder who carries an acceptable accurate English translation. NZTA allows a non-English overseas licence to be accompanied by either an accurate English translation or an IDP. If an IDP is used, the original overseas licence must also be carried. NZTA describes an acceptable IDP as one issued in accordance with a United Nations convention on road traffic. Italian government guidance confirms that Italy can issue IDPs under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions, but a current authoritative source establishing one exclusive model for this exact pair was not verified. No separate pair-specific government recommendation to obtain an IDP rather than an approved translation was verified.
As checked on 26 September 2026, an overseas car licence can currently be used for up to 18 months from the holder's last date of entry into New Zealand. From 1 November 2026 that period reduces to 12 months from the last arrival. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences have a 12-month limit. Italy is listed by NZTA as an exempt country for overseas licence conversion, including car and motorcycle conversion, with Italy also listed as exempt for truck conversion. Conversion requirements depend on licence class and other conditions, so the visitor-use period should not be treated as a separate residency entitlement.
Rental policy can be stricter than the minimum legal documentation rule. Avis New Zealand states that drivers must present a full and valid licence from their country of residence and that a licence not printed in English must be accompanied by a valid IDP. Avis also states that an IDP is only a translation and is not acceptable by itself. This is Avis policy and should not be treated as a rule applying automatically to every rental company.
The driver should carry the current Italian licence and the documentation required for its language: an accurate English translation or an accepted IDP. NZTA states that an IDP used for this purpose must be accompanied by the overseas licence on which it is based. Specific insurance consequences for this origin-destination pair are unverified – confirm with official authority.
The principal exception is the different time limit by vehicle class and date. The temporary 18-month period applies to overseas car licences through 31 October 2026, while motorcycle and truck licences have a 12-month limit. From 1 November 2026 the car limit also becomes 12 months. Continued use additionally depends on the overseas licence remaining valid and on the driver not becoming disqualified, suspended or subject to a superseding New Zealand licence.
Carry the original valid Italian licence and either an NZTA-acceptable English translation or an accepted IDP. If renting, check the selected company's terms before collection because a company may specifically require an IDP even where New Zealand law permits an approved translation instead. Drivers travelling around the 1 November 2026 change should apply the time limit in force to their circumstances.
