Guide to driving in Belgium with a Azores Islands licence.
A valid full driving licence issued in the Azores is a Portuguese EU licence and is recognised in Belgium for the vehicle categories shown on it. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and no official recommendation to carry one was identified. The standard EU licence does not need translation. A visitor can use it while valid, without a separate 185-day limit for EU licences.
For an ordinary holiday or business visit, your Azores-issued Portuguese licence is sufficient to establish the relevant driving entitlement. Check the category, restrictions and expiry date on the actual card.
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal, not a separate sovereign licensing jurisdiction. Belgium treats a valid licence issued within the Portuguese system as a European national driving licence. Recognition follows the EU rule for member-state licences, not a special Azores-Belgium bilateral agreement.
Recognised EU categories are AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. You can drive only the vehicle classes for which your licence gives valid entitlement, subject to relevant Belgian minimum ages and restrictions.
No IDP is legally required for this Portuguese EU licence in Belgium. The government and EU guidance checked did not recommend obtaining an IDP for this specific journey. Neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna IDP model needs to be selected because recognition relies on the EU licence itself.
A separate certified translation is not required for the standard EU-format licence. The licence should be the valid original rather than a provisional document.
Belgium does not impose a fixed maximum visitor-day allowance on valid EU driving licences. You may use yours while it remains valid. The 185-day provision on the Belgian government website concerns recognised non-EU licences, not a Portuguese licence issued in the Azores.
If you settle in Belgium, you can normally keep driving with the valid EU licence rather than exchange it immediately. Belgium requires exchange in specified circumstances, including loss, theft or damage, within two years after Belgian registration when the licence has no administrative expiry date, and certain traffic-offence cases. Contact your municipality as the licence approaches expiry or if one of these circumstances arises.
Rental rules are separate from legal permission to drive. Two published Belgium-facing rental policies expressly accept EU driving licences without an IDP.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Europcar Belgium | No IDP for EU licences. Present an original licence held for at least one year, identity document and booking card. | Europcar FAQ and pickup documents |
| SIXT Belgium | Accepts valid EU/EEA licences without an IDP or translation. Original licence required. | SIXT guidance |
Check the vehicle-class minimum age, length-of-licence-holding and payment requirements when booking. Neither company policy is a Belgian legal rule.
Flemish Government guidance lists the driving licence, identity document, proof of motor insurance, vehicle registration and applicable inspection and conformity documents for driving. For a car brought from Portugal, use the relevant vehicle documents for its registration rather than assuming it has Belgian-issued papers. Keep the original national licence available for a roadside check.
Third-party motor liability insurance is compulsory, and EU-issued compulsory cover extends to driving in other EU countries. Other cover, such as damage to your own car, depends on the insurance policy or rental contract. There is no verified Azores-specific insurance condition.
A Portuguese learner or provisional permit is not automatically recognised for cross-border driving. Driving a motorcycle under an additional domestic entitlement attached to Portuguese category B is not the same as holding a harmonised A1 category. Belgium has its own A1 rules, so confirm your precise right to ride a 125 cc motorcycle before relying on a car licence alone.
If your Portuguese EU licence was originally obtained by exchanging a licence from outside the EU, its treatment after a move to Belgium may need a separate assessment. EU guidance warns that exchange-based EU licences are not always automatically recognised on a subsequent change of residence.
Bring the valid, original Portuguese driving licence issued in the Azores, check its categories and expiry date, and keep identification plus relevant vehicle and insurance papers available. You do not need an IDP or translation for the standard EU licence. Confirm any unusual category entitlement or rental restriction before taking the keys.
