Guide to driving in Bahrain with a Azores Islands licence.
A valid driving licence issued in the Azores is a Portuguese licence. Bahrain can approve it for private-car driving for up to three months from arrival, but approval is not automatic. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a blanket requirement under the national-licence provision, although the official stamping service lists both documents. A Bahrain-specific official IDP recommendation and statutory translation rule were not established.
The decisive step is approval from Bahrain General Directorate of Traffic. A Portuguese licence is not covered by the separate GCC treatment, and a rental desk accepting it does not replace that approval.
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal. Their regional transport authority issues driving licences within the Portuguese system, so Bahrain considers the document a foreign, non-GCC licence. Article 251 of the Bahraini traffic regulations says the General Directorate of Traffic may approve a valid non-GCC private-car licence. This is permission subject to official endorsement, not automatic recognition for every Portuguese driver.
The national-licence rule concerns the private-car class described in Article 223(1)(a). It is not authority to operate every vehicle shown on a Portuguese licence.
Bahrain Regulation Article 294 recognises foreign international licences held by non-Bahrainis within their validity and permitted categories. Article 295 calls for a foreign IDP to be reviewed and registered. A tourist can use it on arrival provided it is presented to the authority the following day. The traffic authority may also authorise rental companies to handle endorsement.
Portugal and Bahrain are parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which provides a common IDP model. Both are also parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention, and Portuguese legislation permits issuance of both models. Bahrain does not expressly identify a preferred model on the checked visitor-stamping page. The separate national-licence approval route in Article 251 does not impose a universal IDP requirement, but the published stamping service lists an original international licence alongside the original national licence. Confirm the model and documents required for your route.
Official Bahrain-specific IDP recommendation: unverified – confirm with official authority. No general legal requirement for a separate certified Portuguese-to-Arabic translation was established. Europcar has a distinct rental-language rule.
For an approved non-GCC private-car licence, Article 251 sets a maximum of three months from the date of entry, regardless of residence status. This is a calendar-month rule, not a fixed number of days. Driving after that period requires a Bahraini licence under the traffic regulations.
Bahrain offers foreign-licence evaluation and recognised-country replacement services, with conditions including a valid original licence and a vision test. Those service descriptions do not establish automatic conversion rights or a test exemption specifically for a Portuguese licence. Ask the Directorate which resident procedure applies before the visitor period ends.
| Company | Published rule relevant to a Portuguese licence |
|---|---|
| Avis Bahrain | Portugal is explicitly exempt from its non-resident IDP requirement. A full licence held at least one year is required, and Avis says licence and passport or residence-permit issuing countries must match. |
| Europcar Bahrain | An IDP is mandatory under its published terms if the licence is in a different language from the renting country or uses unreadable characters. Check acceptance of a Portuguese-language card. |
| Budget Bahrain | Requires an IDP for licences issued outside the European Community, but notes that the traffic department can still require international-licence stamping. |
These are different commercial policies, not a single national rental rule. Confirm the current terms with your actual collection branch.
The Bahraini visitor stamping service lists the original international licence, original private-car licence, passport and original residence information. Under Article 295, a foreign IDP must be presented for review as applicable. Australian government travel advice also tells drivers to carry their licence and vehicle registration card. Do not rely on a photocopy of the Portuguese licence.
Budget Bahrain says CDW is compulsory at its airport branch, third-party liability is included, and its damage waiver excludes unauthorised drivers. No insurance rule specifically voiding cover for an Azores licence without an IDP was established. Check the named-driver and excess provisions in your own rental agreement.
A Portuguese licence does not receive GCC-country treatment in Bahrain. The Article 251 route is limited to private-car entitlement, so motorcycle and heavier vehicle permissions cannot be assumed. Avis may decline its Portugal IDP exemption where the licence country does not match the passport or residence-permit country. Visitors should also confirm vehicle-use restrictions with the traffic authority and their rental company rather than assuming permission to drive a privately owned vehicle.
Ask Bahrain Traffic to confirm the approval and endorsement procedure for your Azores-issued Portuguese licence before booking a car. Request a suitable IDP from the regional transport office or ACP if the authority or chosen rental branch expects one, and carry it with the original national licence. Avis lists a Portugal-specific exemption, but that exemption is its rental policy, not an exemption from Bahrain Traffic approval.
