Guide to driving in Albania with a Mayotte licence.
A standard Mayotte-issued licence is issued under the French driving-licence system and is recognised for travellers in Albania. France Diplomatie says a French licence is sufficient, so an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a separate Albanian translation are not legally required for an ordinary visitor. The Albanian Road Code allows foreign-licence driving while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. Rental companies may apply stricter document rules.
You can drive with a valid standard Mayotte-issued French licence for the vehicle categories shown on it. The checked official guidance does not make an IDP necessary for this licence. The legal time limit is tied to Albanian residence rather than a fixed tourist-day allowance.
French Road Code rules for drivers apply in Mayotte. A standard licence issued there is therefore part of the French driving-licence system rather than a separate Mayotte national licensing system. France Diplomatie states that a French licence is sufficient and recognised for travellers driving in Albania.
Article 133 of the Albanian Road Code permits a driver holding a foreign national or international driving licence to drive the vehicle categories for which that document is valid, provided the driver has not been resident in Albania for more than one year.
An IDP is not legally required for an ordinary traveller using a valid standard French licence from Mayotte. The checked France Diplomatie Albania guidance says the French licence itself is sufficient and does not advise an IDP for this situation.
If a holder nevertheless obtains a French IDP, current French rules use the 1968 Vienna Convention model in Annex 7. The IDP covers the same categories as the national licence and is used together with a valid national licence. Albania and France are parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
Article 133 of the Albanian Road Code requires an official Albanian translation or equivalent document when a foreign licence or IDP does not conform to the models set by international agreements to which Albania is a party. That translation condition does not displace the pair-specific French guidance stating that the French licence alone is sufficient for travellers.
No fixed maximum number of visitor days was verified. The Albanian rule is residence-based: foreign-licence driving is allowed while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year.
For residents, current DPSHTRR guidance allows holders of valid licences issued by an EU member state to apply for conversion when they hold an Albanian residence permit with a term of more than one year and meet the listed application requirements. The conversion process includes a certified translation of the foreign licence and surrender of the original licence at the relevant stage.
Rental-company rules are contractual requirements and can be stricter than Albanian traffic law. The following first-party terms were checked for this page.
| Company | Requirement relevant to a Mayotte licence | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Sixt | Accepts valid EU and EEA driving licences without an IDP or translation. Its Albania information states a minimum licence-holding period of 1 year, with higher age or category conditions possible. | Sixt published IDP guidance and Albania rental information checked 2026-09-29 |
| Enterprise Tirana | Requires a valid driving licence held for at least 3 years, plus ID or passport and a major credit card. The checked location terms do not state an IDP requirement for an EU licence. | Enterprise Albania location terms checked 2026-09-29 |
| Europcar Albania | States that an IDP is mandatory when the licence is written in a language different from the renting country and/or uses characters that cannot be read there. This can make its policy stricter than the legal rule for a French-language licence. | Europcar Albania rental information checked 2026-09-29 |
Article 178 of the Albanian Road Code lists a valid driving licence for the relevant category, the vehicle registration document, the applicable technical-inspection document, and the compulsory-insurance certificate among documents to be carried. Article 133 also preserves professional competence requirements for certain special vehicles.
Albanian Law 32/2021 requires compulsory motor liability insurance for damage caused to third parties. For a traveller taking a foreign-registered personal vehicle into Albania, France Diplomatie advises carrying proof of international insurance that covers Albania. Enterprise Albania separately states that third-party insurance is required by law and included in its rental rates.
The recognition rule covers only categories that are valid on the licence. Professional or special-vehicle activity can require additional competence documents. The main time-limit exception is residence: once the holder has been resident in Albania for more than one year, the foreign-licence rule no longer authorises driving on that licence alone. Rental-company IDP or translation rules can also be stricter than the legal minimum.
For an ordinary visit, carry the original valid Mayotte-issued French licence. An IDP is not required by the checked Albania-specific official guidance, but check the exact rental-company terms before pickup because some firms apply additional language or verification rules. If taking a personal vehicle, also carry registration, technical-inspection evidence where applicable, and proof of compulsory international insurance valid in Albania.
