Guide to driving in Bahrain with a Honduras licence.
A valid Honduras driving licence may qualify for private-car driving in Bahrain, but its use is subject to approval by Bahrain's traffic authority. Bahrain also recognises qualifying foreign International Driving Permits (IDPs) under separate rules. Honduras issues the 1968 Convention IDP. An IDP is required by some rental providers, although a universal legal requirement for every Honduras visitor was not established. Approved foreign private-car licences have a three-month limit from entry.
Bahrain provides two relevant legal routes: approval of a foreign private-car licence and recognition of a qualifying foreign international driving licence. Neither should be mistaken for unconditional acceptance of a Honduras national licence on arrival.
The practical distinction matters most when renting a car. Avis Bahrain requires non-resident customers from countries outside its exemption list to present an international licence alongside their national licence. Honduras is not exempted under that published policy.
Article 251 of Bahrain's implementing traffic regulations allows the General Directorate of Traffic to approve valid private-car licences issued outside the Gulf Cooperation Council. Approval permits private-car driving for no more than three months from entry, regardless of residence status.
Honduras is outside the GCC, so this is the relevant national-licence provision. The wording gives the authority discretion to approve a licence. It does not establish automatic recognition of every licence issued in Honduras.
Article 294 separately recognises foreign international driving licences held by non-Bahrainis, within their validity and for the categories authorised by those licences. A Honduras holder therefore needs to distinguish approval of the national licence from recognition of an IDP.
No verified Bahrain provision was found granting Honduras licences a special bilateral exemption. The exact treatment of Honduras licence categories beyond private cars and the classes authorised by an accepted IDP should be confirmed with the General Directorate of Traffic.
Honduras and Bahrain are parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. United Nations treaty records show that Bahrain has been bound by the convention since 21 May 1977 and Honduras since 3 February 2021. Honduras acceded on 3 February 2020.
The international IDP repository identifies Honduras's Dirección Nacional de Vialidad y Transporte (DNVT) as its issuing authority and identifies the 1968 Convention model as the IDP issued by Honduras. This is the relevant documented Honduras-issued model. The treaty relationship should not be interpreted as removing Bahrain's domestic approval or presentation procedures.
An IDP is not demonstrated to be universally mandatory for all Honduras drivers because Article 251 provides a separate route for an approved foreign private-car licence. Article 294 addresses foreign international licences independently. The official position on recommending an IDP in circumstances where national-licence approval is available is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Article 295 requires foreign international driving licences to be presented to the traffic authority for examination and registration. Tourists and transit travellers may use them on arrival, provided they present them to the authority on the following day. Bahrain also publishes a government service for endorsing foreign international driving licences.
A separate mandatory certified-translation rule for Honduras licences was not established. Because the national licence is issued in Honduras, travellers should ask whether its language and presentation meet the authority's requirements. An IDP provides standardised multilingual driving-licence information but does not replace the original national licence.
Article 251 sets a maximum of three months from entry for driving private cars under an approved non-GCC national licence. The provision applies regardless of the holder's residence status. It does not create a fresh three-month allowance simply because someone becomes a resident.
Article 294 separately states that qualifying foreign international driving licences are valid in Bahrain throughout their validity for the authorised vehicle categories. However, a renewal performed while the holder is in Bahrain is not recognised under that article. The relationship between the IDP validity provision and individual immigration or licensing circumstances should be confirmed with the traffic authority before relying on it for an extended stay.
For people establishing residence, Bahrain provides government services for replacement of licences from recognised countries and evaluation of other foreign licences. The published requirements include a valid original foreign licence and, where applicable, a vision test and identity documentation. The authority must determine which process applies to a Honduras licence. Automatic exchange eligibility and any Honduras-specific testing exemption remain unverified – confirm with official authority.
Car-rental requirements are contractual and can be stricter than the conditions under which a foreign licence may be legally recognised.
| Rental provider | Published requirement relevant to Honduras | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Avis Bahrain | Non-resident renters outside the published country exemptions need an international driving licence with their national licence. Honduras is not an exempted country. The national licence must have been held for at least one year. | Avis Bahrain terms and conditions |
| Selfdrive Bahrain | The company states that visitors require an international driving licence and residents require a Bahrain driving licence. It also publishes minimum licence-holding conditions. | Selfdrive Bahrain terms and conditions |
These policies establish what the named providers publish, not what every rental desk will accept. Before making a non-refundable booking, confirm that the company accepts a Honduras-issued national licence accompanied by a valid 1968 Convention IDP and ask whether any Bahrain traffic-authority endorsement must be completed first.
Bahrain's government service for foreign international-licence endorsement lists a valid original foreign international licence, a valid original foreign private-car licence and passport-related documentation. Article 295 supplies the relevant presentation procedure and special arrangements for tourists and transit travellers.
Carry original documents rather than relying only on photographs or digital copies. The precise documentation demanded during routine roadside enforcement is unverified – confirm with official authority. No particular police-check frequency or Honduras-specific penalty was established.
Insurance is a separate question from licence recognition. No official source checked established that a missing IDP automatically voids insurance for every Honduras driver. Rental providers may nevertheless impose driver-eligibility conditions and damage excesses. Read the agreement before accepting the vehicle and confirm that the licence documents satisfy the insurer and rental company.
The three-month national-licence provision applies to approved private-car licences, not automatically to every vehicle category. An accepted international driving licence covers only the categories it authorises.
GCC licence arrangements are governed separately under Article 251 and do not provide a Honduras licence holder with a GCC exemption.
Article 294 does not recognise renewal of a foreign international driving licence carried out while its holder is present in Bahrain. Article 295 also requires attention to the traffic-authority presentation procedure even where the traveller enters as a tourist.
No verified bilateral Honduras–Bahrain licence-recognition agreement or specific exemption for Honduras licence holders was identified.
Before leaving Honduras, obtain confirmation that your licence is eligible for the intended driving activity in Bahrain. If renting, arrange a valid 1968 Convention IDP through the authorised Honduran issuing process and confirm acceptance with the rental provider. Keep the original Honduras licence with the IDP.
Ask Bahrain's General Directorate of Traffic how to complete the foreign-IDP presentation or endorsement procedure. If you intend to remain in Bahrain or change your residence status, seek an individual assessment of whether licence evaluation or replacement is required. Do not assume the three-month national-licence approval rule gives unrestricted driving rights.
This information was checked against the official and first-party sources listed above on 2026-10-22. That is a verification date, not the date of a legal change. Licence acceptance, administrative procedures and rental policies should be reconfirmed before travel.
