Guide to driving in Belgium with a Canary Islands licence.
Yes. A full, valid driving licence issued in the Canary Islands is a Spanish EU licence and is recognised in Belgium for the vehicle categories it authorises. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is neither legally required nor officially recommended for this EU journey, and no licence translation is needed. There is no fixed visitor-day limit under the verified EU-licence rule, but the licence must remain valid.
The decisive detail is the issuing country: the Canary Islands form part of Spain, not a separate driving-licence jurisdiction. The usual Belgian rules for valid EU licences therefore apply. Rental companies can still impose age, document and licence-holding conditions.
The Canary Islands are an autonomous region of Spain, and Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is the national driving-licence authority. Belgium’s Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport recognises valid driving licences issued by EU or EEA member states. This is EU recognition of a Spanish licence, not a special Canary Islands–Belgium agreement.
EU categories recognised across member states include AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. Recognition covers only the categories actually recorded on the holder’s licence, subject to relevant Belgian age conditions.
An IDP is not legally required. The DGT states that a valid Spanish licence may be used during temporary travel within the EU or EEA without additional authorisation. No official recommendation to obtain an IDP for this trip was found.
Neither the 1949 Geneva nor the 1968 Vienna IDP model needs to be selected, because recognition comes directly from the Spanish EU licence. A separate translation of that valid EU licence is not required. This conclusion does not extend to an unrelated licence issued by a non-EU country merely because its holder lives in the Canary Islands.
Visitors may drive with the valid Spanish licence for their temporary stay. Belgium’s EU-licence guidance sets no fixed maximum number of visitor days, so a numerical visitor limit would be misleading.
After taking up residence, holders may generally continue driving on the EU licence while it remains valid. Belgium requires exchange in particular cases, including loss, theft or damage, an EU licence without an administrative expiry date within two years after Belgian registration, and the specified traffic-offence situation involving a temporary Belgian licence. Exchange is handled through the municipality of registration. The 185-day rule published for non-EU licences is not the visitor limit for this Spanish licence.
Belgian driving law and hire-counter rules are separate. SIXT says it accepts valid EU and EEA licences without an IDP or translation and requires the original licence. Europcar Belgium also exempts EU licence holders from its IDP requirement, asks for an original licence, identity document and the credit card used for booking, and states that the licence must have been held for at least one year. Check the booked car category and driver-age conditions before paying.
The Government of Flanders lists a driving licence, identity document, insurance certificate, registration certificate and relevant vehicle inspection documents among the papers to carry. These are vehicle and driver documentation rules, not a reason for a Spanish EU licence holder to obtain an IDP. For a rental car, check that the required vehicle papers are in the car.
Motor third-party liability insurance is compulsory. The European Commission says a home-country motor policy provides third-party liability protection throughout the EU, while EU rental vehicles must include third-party liability cover in the rental price. Carry insurance evidence and check any additional damage or theft protection in the applicable policy or rental agreement.
EU-wide recognition does not cover provisional or learner permits, and an expired, suspended or withdrawn licence cannot be treated as valid. Minimum ages may also differ between EU states for particular categories. A Canary Islands address does not turn a non-Spanish licence into a Spanish EU-issued one.
Use your original, current Spanish driving licence with the category needed for your vehicle. You do not need to apply for an IDP or arrange a translation just to drive in Belgium. If hiring, bring the original identity and payment documents specified by your provider, and confirm its age and licence-holding rules. If moving to Belgium, ask your municipality about exchange when an applicable trigger arises.
