Guide to driving in New Zealand with a Botswana licence.
Botswana and New Zealand are separate countries. A holder of a current Botswana driving licence may drive in New Zealand under the rules set by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. Recognition does not depend on a bilateral agreement but on New Zealand’s general recognition of overseas licences.
A current and valid Botswana licence allows driving in New Zealand for visitors. An International Driving Permit is not legally required if the licence is in English. If the licence is not in English, either an accurate English translation or an IDP is required. The current visitor period for car licences is up to 18 months from last entry.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi states that a person may drive without a New Zealand driver licence if they hold a current and valid overseas licence or driver permit, have not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand, and have not been given a New Zealand driver licence since last entering the country.
A full overseas car licence permits driving a car or light vehicle with a gross laden weight of up to 6000 kg, equivalent to a New Zealand Class 1 licence. Full overseas motorcycle licences permit any size motorcycle, equivalent to New Zealand Class 6. Learner, restricted or provisional licences carry lower limits. Botswana is not listed among the exempt countries for conversion, so conversion requires theory and practical tests.
Both Botswana and New Zealand are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.
An International Driving Permit is not legally required when the Botswana licence is in English. Official language status in Botswana is English, and licences are issued under English-language legislation. If any part of the licence is not in English, an accurate English translation or an IDP issued in accordance with a United Nations Convention on Road Traffic is required.
An IDP may be current or expired up to six months for car licences only, provided the original overseas licence is also carried. The IDP serves as a translation and is not a standalone licence. Practical recommendation is to obtain a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP if there is any doubt about the language of the licence or if renting a vehicle.
Visitors may currently drive on an overseas car licence for up to 18 months from the last date of entry into New Zealand. From 1 November 2026 the period reduces to 12 months for new arrivals. Overseas motorcycle or truck licences may be used for up to 12 months. Leaving New Zealand and returning restarts the period.
If a person becomes a resident or stays beyond the visitor limit, they must convert to a New Zealand driver licence. Conversion for a Botswana licence (non-exempt country) requires identity evidence, eyesight check, medical certificate if needed, the original licence plus translation if required, and successful theory and practical tests at a specialist overseas conversion site.
Rental companies set their own terms. Most require a current full unrestricted licence and will accept an English-language overseas licence. If the licence is not in English, an IDP or approved translation is normally required at vehicle collection. Minimum driver age and the length of time the licence must have been held differ by company and vehicle type. No named rental-company terms specific to Botswana licences were verified for this guide; confirm directly with the provider.
Drivers must carry their current overseas licence while driving. If the licence is not in English, the translation or IDP must also be carried. New Zealand Police direct visitors to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi rules. Specific insurance conditions for Botswana licence holders were not verified in official sources; check policy wording with the insurer or rental company.
Botswana licences are treated as non-exempt for conversion purposes, so testing is required. Weight and class limits follow New Zealand rules where they differ from the overseas licence. The temporary extension of the car visitor period to 18 months ends on 31 October 2026. An IDP alone is never sufficient; the original Botswana licence must always be carried with it.
Verify that your Botswana licence card is fully in English. Carry the original licence at all times. If any text is not in English, obtain a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP or an approved English translation before travel. Contact your chosen rental company for their exact document and age rules. For longer stays, begin the conversion process well before the visitor period ends, allowing time for testing.
