Guide to driving in Albania with a Australia licence.
An Australian licence holder can drive in Albania under Albania's foreign-licence rules, but current Australian Government guidance says Australians need both a current Australian driver's licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP). Australia issues the 1949 Geneva Convention form of IDP. Albanian law allows foreign-licence use only while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year.
Take your current physical Australian licence and a valid IDP. Smartraveller specifically states that both are needed to drive in Albania. Albania's Road Code separately recognises foreign national and international permits subject to its residence, document-format and vehicle-category conditions.
Article 133 of Albania's Road Code provides that drivers holding a national or international driving permit issued by a foreign state may drive vehicles for which their permit is valid, provided they have not been resident in Albania for more than one year. The rule is destination-wide rather than a special Australian exemption.
The same article states that where a foreign national or international permit does not conform to models established by international agreements to which Albania is a party, it must be accompanied by an official translation into Albanian or an equivalent document, unless a special international agreement provides otherwise.
Current Australian Government Smartraveller guidance for Albania states that Australians need both an IDP and a current Australian driver's licence. The Australian Automobile Association is the authorised Australian issuer and states that Australian IDPs use the format stipulated by the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. Albania and Australia are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, making the 1949 permit the relevant Australian-issued IDP for this trip.
The IDP does not replace the Australian licence. The Australian Automobile Association states that it is valid only when carried with the current domestic licence photo card.
Albanian law does not express the foreign-licence rule as a fixed tourist stay measured from entry. Article 133 instead allows use while the driver has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. For that reason, no fixed maximum visitor-day value is stated here.
DPSHTRR publishes a separate foreign-licence conversion procedure for qualifying residents. Its current conversion information names EU states, the United States, Canada and countries covered by applicable bilateral or reciprocity arrangements. Australia is not named in DPSHTRR's published list of bilateral recognition and conversion agreements, so an Australian resident should confirm eligibility directly with DPSHTRR rather than assume a straightforward exchange is available.
No named rental-company policy was verified for this Australia-to-Albania pair. Rental companies may impose documentation, age or licence-holding-period conditions beyond road-law requirements. Confirm the conditions with the company you will actually use and bring both the physical Australian licence and IDP.
For an Australian traveller, the clearest current government instruction is to have both the current Australian licence and IDP. The Australian Automobile Association also warns that digital Australian driver licences may not be accepted overseas. A specific Albania-wide insurance consequence for Australian drivers who lack an IDP could not be verified from the authoritative sources checked, so insurance conditions are unverified – confirm with official authority and your insurer.
You may drive only vehicle categories covered by the valid licence or permit. Article 133 also addresses drivers of special vehicles where the issuing state requires a professional competence certificate or other qualification in addition to the driving permit. Those drivers must possess the necessary professional qualification documents.
A separate Albanian translation is conditional rather than universally required. Albania's Road Code requires an official Albanian translation or equivalent document when the foreign permit does not conform to an applicable international model. Carrying the recognised IDP alongside the Australian licence provides the standard international permit and translation document relevant to ordinary Australian visitors.
Before leaving Australia, obtain the official 1949-format IDP through the Australian Automobile Association or an authorised member club. Carry it with your current physical Australian licence whenever you drive. If renting, check the chosen company's terms separately because rental policy can impose requirements beyond Albanian road law.
