Utah ehliyeti ile Bahrain ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Utah private-car licence can be used in Bahrain if its General Directorate of Traffic approves it, for up to three months from entry. The U.S. Department of State recommends an International Driving Permit (IDP), rather than stating a universal legal requirement. Bahrain has rules for presenting a foreign IDP for review, and Hertz and SIXT require one for foreign renters.
A Utah Class D licence is a U.S. driving credential for ordinary motor vehicles, excluding motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Bahrain treats it as a non-Gulf Cooperation Council foreign licence. Its traffic regulations make private-car recognition conditional on approval rather than automatic.
Article 251 of Bahrain’s Traffic Regulations allows the General Directorate of Traffic to approve private-car licences from outside the Gulf Cooperation Council for up to three months from entry. The rule covers private cars and does not grant unlimited recognition of every category shown on a U.S. licence. The U.S. Department of State says a valid U.S. driver licence is needed to drive in Bahrain.
The Utah Driver License Division identifies its ordinary Class D as a licence for motor vehicles other than motorcycles and commercial vehicles. That makes the private-car rule the relevant starting point for a regular Utah licence holder. Approval of an individual licence must still be established with the Bahraini authority.
The U.S. Department of State recommends an IDP for Bahrain but does not describe one as universally legally compulsory. Bahrain Article 251 offers a route for an approved foreign private-car licence without expressly imposing a separate IDP requirement. An IDP is nevertheless necessary under the published rental terms of Hertz Bahrain Airport and SIXT Bahrain.
The relevant U.S.-issued permit is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Both the United States and Bahrain are parties to that convention, with Bahrain’s accession taking effect in April 2025. AAA is a U.S.-authorized issuer. The IDP accompanies, rather than replaces, the valid Utah licence.
Article 295 requires holders of foreign IDPs to present them to the General Directorate of Traffic for review and registration. It allows tourists and transit travellers to use them on arrival provided they present them the following day. Bahrain also publishes a foreign-IDP stamping service. The English-language Utah licence avoids a script mismatch, but a separate translation requirement is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Article 251 sets a maximum of three months from the date of entry for an approved non-GCC private-car licence, regardless of residence status. This is a calendar-month rule, not a fixed number of days. Anyone wishing to continue driving after that period must obtain a Bahraini driving licence through the applicable process.
Bahrain offers foreign-licence assessment and replacement services, but the reviewed government material does not establish automatic exchange eligibility for a Utah licence. Hertz also requires its Bahrain-resident renters to present a Bahraini licence, a separate company rule.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz Bahrain Airport | Valid national licence held at least one year, plus an IDP for drivers living outside Bahrain. Bahraini licence required for residents. | Hertz Bahrain Airport |
| SIXT Bahrain | Valid licence held at least one year, passport or identity card, and IDP for foreign drivers. | SIXT Bahrain |
These two suppliers require the IDP even though U.S. government guidance presents it as a recommendation for driving. Their terms do not establish what every Bahrain rental company requires.
Bahrain’s stamping service lists original foreign private and international licences, passport and original residence information. The U.S. Department of State says police preparing an accident report ask for an identity document or passport, a driving licence and a phone number. Those published lists should not be treated as an exhaustive description of every roadside check.
The State Department advises not moving vehicles after major accidents before a traffic-police report, warning that insurance companies may deny coverage otherwise. It says accident reports must be filed within 24 hours. Insurance terms for a particular rental or vehicle must be checked in its policy rather than inferred from the IDP guidance.
The three-month Article 251 permission is subject to official approval and concerns private-car licences. It does not by itself permit a Utah Class D holder to drive motorcycles, commercial transport or other specialised vehicles. Article 252 treats foreign private-transport licences separately. No exception specific to Utah was verified.
Before departure, obtain a 1949 IDP from an authorized U.S. issuer and take the physical Utah licence. Contact Bahrain’s General Directorate of Traffic about approval and stamping, including the timing set out in Article 295. Confirm the rental branch’s documentation requirements. For a stay that may exceed three months, ask about a Bahraini licence before the foreign-licence window ends.
