Illinois ehliyeti ile Armenia ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
An Illinois driver's licence can be used for short-term driving in Armenia subject to Armenian foreign-licence conditions. The US State Department says visitors must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before arrival and may drive on a foreign licence for up to three months after entry. Armenian law separately provides a Latin-script translation exception, leaving some uncertainty about driving without an IDP. The safest documented approach is to carry both.
The practical distinction is between recognition of the Illinois licence and the documents recommended for using it. Armenian legislation recognises qualifying foreign licences under specified conditions, while US government travel guidance expressly calls for an IDP. An IDP supplements the state licence and does not replace it.
For an ordinary visitor, the US State Department specifies a three-month foreign-licence period. Rental acceptance is a separate matter and must be confirmed with the individual company.
Illinois is a US state with its own driver licensing system. Armenia is a separate sovereign country, so an Illinois licence is treated as a foreign national licence rather than a domestic Armenian document.
Article 28 of Armenia's Law on Ensuring Road Traffic Safety governs recognition of foreign driving licences. Article 28(18) addresses licences issued in countries without a shared applicable road-traffic treaty. It provides recognition subject to reciprocity and a notarised Armenian translation, except where all entries on the foreign licence are written or duplicated in Latin characters.
This exception matters because Illinois licences use English and Latin characters. However, the exception should be assessed against the actual entries on the licence presented, and it does not by itself resolve the separate IDP guidance issued by the US State Department.
Article 28(19) recognises foreign licences only for the corresponding vehicle categories and subject to Armenian minimum ages. The Armenian legislation identifies age 18 for categories A, B and C and certain related subcategories. An Illinois passenger-car licence should not be treated as automatic permission to drive motorcycles, heavy vehicles or passenger buses.
The US State Department's Armenia travel guidance says that visitors must obtain an IDP before arrival. This is the clearest operational instruction published by the traveller's national government.
Armenia's statutory framework is more nuanced. Its recognition provision allows qualifying Latin-script foreign licences to avoid the notarised Armenian translation condition. Because that provision does not expressly settle every question about a US-issued IDP, the legal necessity of an IDP for every Illinois licence holder cannot be stated without qualification. Obtain one rather than relying on an assumed exemption.
The United Nations treaty records establish that the United States participates in the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and Armenia participates in the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. These are different treaty frameworks. Their respective participation does not establish a shared convention obligation to recognise an Illinois licence or automatically settle acceptance of every IDP format.
AAA issues US International Driving Permits under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework and identifies itself as an authorised US issuer. Its IDP is a supplementary document, not an independent driving licence. The specific Armenian acceptance treatment of the US-issued model remains unverified – confirm with official authority.
The US State Department states that driving with a foreign licence is allowed for up to three months from the date of entry into Armenia. Because the published period is expressed in months, it should not be treated as a fixed 90-day entitlement.
The same guidance instructs long-term visitors to apply for an Armenian driving licence. Armenian legislation also contains provisions concerning exchange of certain foreign licences, including licences meeting the requirements of the 1968 Vienna Convention. Those provisions do not establish automatic exchange eligibility for every Illinois licence.
An Illinois holder planning to reside in Armenia should ask the Armenian licensing authority about local licensing, eligibility for exchange, testing requirements and the point at which foreign-licence driving must stop. An Illinois-specific exchange entitlement or resident grace period was not verified.
No named rental-company terms were verified specifically for this origin and destination. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that all Armenian rental companies accept an Illinois licence alone or uniformly require an IDP.
Before paying for a reservation, confirm acceptance of the original Illinois licence, the US-issued IDP and the driver's age and licence category. Ask about any minimum driving-experience requirement and which documents the company needs at collection. A company may apply contractual conditions independently of the statutory driving rules.
Article 28(16) of Armenian road traffic legislation states that a foreign national driving with an international permit must also have the national driving licence. Illinois visitors should therefore carry the original state licence alongside the IDP, rather than presenting the permit by itself.
Additional roadside documentation requirements were not conclusively established from the checked provisions. They remain unverified – confirm with official authority.
Armenia's compulsory motor liability insurance law requires third-party liability insurance for vehicles within its scope. Its provisions generally prohibit driving covered vehicles on public roads without a valid compulsory insurance contract. For a rental car, confirm that the vehicle is insured and that the driver is authorised under the rental agreement. Do not assume the compulsory policy includes collision damage or every optional rental protection.
The Latin-character exception in Article 28(18) concerns the Armenian translation condition. It should not be described as a universal exemption from all foreign-driver documentation requirements.
Foreign-licence recognition is restricted to corresponding vehicle categories and Armenian minimum ages. Article 28(17) also limits employment or business activities directly involving driving under foreign licences, with specified exceptions. A tourist's ability to drive a private passenger car does not establish permission to work as a professional driver.
Obtain a US-issued IDP through AAA before travelling and take the original valid Illinois licence. This follows the explicit US government instruction and avoids relying on an unresolved interpretation of the Armenian Latin-script exception.
For a rental, secure confirmation of document acceptance before collection. Check that the intended vehicle falls within your licensed category and that the compulsory motor liability policy applies. For stays approaching three months or involving residence, seek guidance on Armenian licensing before continuing to drive.
Information checked against the official legislation, government guidance, United Nations treaty records and AAA information listed above on 2026-10-19. This is the verification date, not the date on which the underlying rules necessarily changed. Unresolved questions about IDP acceptance and individual rental policies should be confirmed before travel.
