Delaware ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid standard Delaware driving licence can be used in Greece for the vehicle categories expressly covered by Greek law, including passenger cars. An International Driving Permit is not legally required under the U.S.-licence provision, and the current provision does not impose a separate translation requirement. U.S. Department of State guidance says a Greek licence is required if the stay exceeds 185 days. Rental and insurance contracts can impose stricter document rules.
For an ordinary Delaware licence used to drive a passenger car, the core legal position is straightforward: Greece expressly recognizes valid U.S.-issued licences for the listed categories during the holder's stay. The main practical variable is not Greek law but the rental company or insurer, because some firms still ask for an IDP.
Delaware is a U.S. state and the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles is the state licensing authority. Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025, Article 98(3)(h), expressly covers valid driving licences issued by the United States. The covered categories are mopeds, motorcycles, motorized tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The Delaware licence must carry the corresponding entitlement, and the driver must satisfy the minimum age required in Greece for the category.
An International Driving Permit is not a legal requirement for a holder using the specific U.S.-licence route in Article 98(3)(h). If a rental company or insurer nevertheless requires an IDP, U.S. government guidance identifies AAA and AATA as the authorized U.S. issuers and states that their permits meet the standards of the 1949 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic. An IDP supplements the national licence and does not replace it.
The U.S. Department of State states that a Greek licence is required if a person stays in Greece for more than 185 days. Greece's National Registry of Administrative Public Services separately provides a conversion procedure for valid U.S. driving licences when the holder acquires usual residence in Greece. The conversion process has its own residence, document and verification requirements, so it should not be confused with the short-stay visitor rule.
Rental policy is not uniform. Autohellas Hertz publishes a country table accepting a national driving licence for U.S. drivers. Enterprise terms checked for its Kos Island International Airport location state that U.S.A. licence holders do not require an IDP. By contrast, SIXT Greece states that a licence issued outside the EU must be complemented by an international driving permit. The booking company's current terms therefore matter even though Greek law itself does not require an IDP for a standard U.S. licence.
Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence. It also lists vehicle registration and proof of insurance among the normal vehicle documents. For a car rented from a rental or leasing company, the law specifically provides for a copy of the vehicle registration and removes the requirement to carry proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt. Separately, the U.S. Department of State warns that an insurer may require both the U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage.
The U.S.-licence provision covers the vehicle categories named in Article 98 and should not be extended to unverified commercial or specialist categories. A separate Delaware-specific exception is the Delaware Driving Privilege Card. Delaware DMV states that this card is valid for driving purposes only within the state of Delaware, so it should not be treated as the standard Delaware licence for driving in Greece.
For a standard Delaware licence holder renting a passenger car for a stay of no more than 185 days, carry the original valid Delaware licence and make sure its category covers the vehicle. Greek law does not require an IDP or a separate translation for this U.S.-issued licence route. Check the rental and insurer terms before booking. If either requires an IDP, obtain the U.S. 1949 Geneva Convention permit from AAA or AATA before travel.
