Connecticut ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Connecticut driving licence is recognised in Greece for the vehicle types covered by the U.S.-licence provision in Greek law, provided the licence is valid and authorises that vehicle. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for those categories, and no translation is required for visitor driving. U.S. guidance says a Greek licence is required after 185 days.
For ordinary visitor driving in a passenger car, the Connecticut licence itself is the legal foundation. The Greek Road Traffic Code expressly names licences issued by the United States. An IDP remains useful as a supplementary document because official U.S. guidance recommends obtaining one for overseas driving and some private rental or insurance policies may impose their own document conditions.
Connecticut is a U.S. state, so a Connecticut licence falls within the Greek Road Traffic Code provision for licences issued by the United States. Article 98(3)(h) recognises valid U.S.-issued licences for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars during a stay in Greece. The driver must also have reached the minimum age required for the corresponding Greek licence and must hold the entitlement for the vehicle being driven.
The separate Article 98 rule requiring an official Greek or English translation concerns licences from states that do not issue IDPs. It is not the rule used for U.S.-issued licences, which have their own express recognition clause. For that reason, a Connecticut licence does not need a translation for the visitor-driving categories covered by the U.S. provision.
Greek law does not make an IDP a condition of the U.S.-licence recognition in Article 98(3)(h). The legal result for the named vehicle categories is therefore no IDP requirement. This should be kept separate from official U.S. travel advice and private contractual rules.
The U.S. Department of State advises travellers who plan to drive abroad to obtain an IDP and carry the U.S. licence. It also states that AAA and AATA are the active U.S. organisations authorised to issue IDPs meeting the 1949 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic standards. For a Connecticut licence holder who chooses or is contractually required to carry an IDP, the relevant U.S.-issued document is therefore the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, used together with the original licence.
The U.S. Department of State Greece guidance states that a Greek licence is required if a person stays more than 185 days in Greece. Greece also has an official administrative procedure for converting a valid U.S. licence after acquisition of usual residence in Greece. The conversion procedure requires a valid foreign licence and supporting residence documentation, and it includes an official translation of the foreign licence. This conversion translation requirement does not change the no-translation result for short-term visitor driving under Article 98(3)(h).
Rental-company policy can be stricter than the legal rule and can vary even within the same brand. Current published terms checked for Greece show that Hertz lists U.S. drivers as able to use the national licence and Enterprise says a U.S. national licence does not require an IDP. SIXT Athens states that drivers with licences from outside the EU also need an IDP. Avis Greece pages are location-specific: its Lefkas terms accept a U.S. national licence in Latin characters, while a Santorini page says licences issued outside the EU must be accompanied by an IDP.
| Company or location | Published requirement checked |
|---|---|
| Hertz Greece | U.S. national driving licence accepted. General rental terms require the licence to have been held for at least 12 months. |
| Enterprise Greece | U.S. national licence accepted without an IDP. Full valid licence and identity card or passport required, with at least one year of licence holding. |
| SIXT Athens | Valid licence held for one year plus ID or passport. A licence from outside the EU also needs an IDP. |
| Avis Greece | Location terms differ. Lefkas accepts a U.S. national licence in Latin characters, while Santorini publishes an IDP requirement for licences issued outside the EU. |
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code says a driver must carry the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and proof of road-tax payment, plus any category-specific documents that apply. The same article gives rental and leasing vehicles a special document rule: they carry only a copy of the registration and are not required to carry proof of insurance or road-tax payment.
Insurance should be checked separately from licence legality. The U.S. Department of State warns that some insurers may require both a valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. That is a possible policy condition rather than a general Greek IDP rule.
The Greek U.S.-licence provision names mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. A Connecticut Class D licence is a non-commercial licence. Connecticut DMV states that motorcycle operation on public highways requires an M endorsement, so Greek recognition does not expand the vehicle entitlement printed or encoded on the Connecticut licence.
The U.S.-specific Greek clause does not itself establish authority for commercial trucks, buses or public-service driving. Those uses can involve additional Greek category or professional-competence requirements and should not be inferred from the passenger-car rule.
For a short passenger-car trip, use the original valid Connecticut licence and confirm that the licence covers the vehicle. An IDP is not required by the Greek U.S.-licence recognition rule, but a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is a useful additional document because official U.S. guidance recommends one and some rental or insurance contracts may demand it. Check the exact rental location before payment. For a stay approaching 185 days or a move to Greece, review the official conversion process early.
