Uruguay ehliyeti ile New Zealand ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A current and valid Uruguay driving licence can be used in New Zealand under NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi rules for overseas licences. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not specifically mandatory if any required English translation is supplied by another accepted method. As of 26 September 2026, car licences can currently be used for up to 18 months from the last entry, reducing to 12 months on 1 November 2026. Motorcycle and truck licences have a 12-month limit.
The Uruguay licence falls under New Zealand's general overseas-licence rules. Keep the original licence with you. If it is not in English, you must also have an accurate English translation or an acceptable IDP. The Automóvil Club del Uruguay issues international permits and recommends obtaining one for driving abroad.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi allows a person to drive without a New Zealand licence when the overseas licence or driver permit is current and valid, the person has not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand, and the person has not been issued a New Zealand driver licence since the last entry. A full overseas car licence permits driving a car or light vehicle subject to the New Zealand class 1 limit of 6000 kg gross laden weight. Overseas motorcycle and other licence privileges remain subject to New Zealand class restrictions and limits.
New Zealand does not make an IDP the only acceptable document accompanying a non-English overseas licence. NZTA permits an accurate English translation from an accepted source or an IDP issued in accordance with a United Nations Convention on Road Traffic. The Automóvil Club del Uruguay states that it issues Uruguay's international driving permit and describes it as a multilingual translation used with the national licence. Its published information refers to the Geneva 1949 and Vienna 1968 conventions, but the exact convention model applicable to this New Zealand trip was not established from the checked sources, so that detail is unverified – confirm with official authority.
As checked on 26 September 2026, NZTA currently allows an overseas car licence to be used for up to 18 months from the driver's last entry into New Zealand. From 1 November 2026 that car-licence period reduces to 12 months from the last entry. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences may be used for up to 12 months. A person staying beyond the applicable period must obtain a New Zealand licence to continue driving. Uruguay is not on NZTA's exempt-country list for overseas licence conversion, so it is treated as a non-exempt country for that process.
Rental policy is separate from the legal right to drive. Avis New Zealand states that drivers must present a full and valid licence from their country of residence and requires a valid IDP when the licence is not printed in English. The IDP is not accepted by Avis as a standalone licence. This is a verified Avis policy and should not be treated as a rule applying automatically to every rental company.
NZTA says the current overseas driver licence must be carried while driving. Where the licence is not in English, the required accurate English translation or acceptable IDP must also accompany it. No sufficiently specific authoritative insurance condition for a Uruguay licence holder in New Zealand was verified, so insurance consequences are unverified – confirm with official authority.
The time limit is not identical for every vehicle category. The temporary 18-month rule applies to overseas car licences until 31 October 2026, while motorcycle and truck licences have a 12-month limit. New Zealand vehicle-class and weight restrictions can also limit what an overseas licence holder may drive even where the foreign licence authorises a broader category.
Travel with the original current Uruguay licence. If the licence is not in English, also carry an accepted English translation or an acceptable IDP. Obtaining the IDP is a practical choice for a Uruguay licence holder because it provides a multilingual translation and can satisfy rental documentation policies such as the verified Avis requirement. Do not rely on an IDP by itself.
This information was checked against the listed sources on 26 September 2026. The car-licence time limit is already scheduled to change on 1 November 2026, so travellers driving after that date should apply the 12-month rule.
