Ukraine ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Ukrainian national driving licence is recognised in Greece. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not generally required for a convention-compliant Ukrainian licence, although the Ukrainian licensing authority recommends obtaining one for international travel. No fixed visitor-day limit was verified. People covered by EU temporary protection receive an additional safeguard: Greece may not require an IDP or certified translation while that protection applies.
The legal position and the rental-car position are different. Greek and Ukrainian official sources support use of the Ukrainian national licence in Greece under the 1968 Vienna Convention, while two major rental companies checked publish stricter documentation rules for non-EU licences.
The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum states that driving licences issued in Ukraine are accepted for driving throughout Greece and identifies the basis as both countries being contracting parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. The Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine independently lists Greece among states where the Ukrainian national licence is recognised under the same Convention.
Recognition covers the vehicle category or categories for which the licence is valid. The Convention also permits age-based limits, including refusal to recognise licences held by drivers under 18 and specific limits for certain heavy-vehicle categories.
For a valid Ukrainian national licence that satisfies the Vienna Convention requirements, an IDP is not a general legal requirement in Greece. The applicable treaty relationship is the 1968 Vienna Convention, with the IDP model set out in Annex 7. The Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine nevertheless recommends obtaining an IDP for international travel and issues IDPs through territorial service centres.
For people enjoying temporary protection or adequate national protection under the EU framework, Regulation (EU) 2022/1280 is explicit: Member States must recognise valid Ukrainian driving licences and may not require a certified translation or an IDP while the protection applies.
No authoritative source checked established a fixed maximum number of visitor days for a Ukrainian licence holder. The Vienna Convention framework concerns international recognition and does not require a state to keep recognising a foreign licence after that state becomes the normal residence of the holder. For qualifying people under temporary protection, the EU special recognition rule continues for the duration of that protection. The EU temporary-protection framework is currently extended to 4 March 2028.
For Ukrainian residents in Greece who are outside the temporary-protection rule, the exact current Greek conversion or exchange route was not established from an authoritative source checked for this page. unverified – confirm with official authority
Rental companies may ask for more than Greek law requires for driving. Hertz Greece says a driver must have held a licence for at least 12 months and requires an international licence for non-EU countries. Avis Greece says the driver must have held a licence for at least one year and requires either an EU-issued licence or an IDP, with the IDP accompanied by the national licence. Ukraine is not an EU Member State, so these published policies make an IDP relevant when renting even though it is not generally required by the Greece–Ukraine legal recognition rule.
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code lists the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and road-tax payment among the documents carried by drivers, subject to applicable exceptions. Rental or leasing vehicles carry a copy of the registration and are exempt from carrying insurance and road-tax proof. Under Regulation (EU) 2022/1280, authorities may ask a person relying on temporary-protection recognition to show a passport, temporary-residence document or other adequate identity document.
No Ukraine-specific insurance condition was verified. Hertz Greece states that authorised drivers receive fire cover for the rented vehicle and third-party liability cover, subject to the insurer contract terms.
The EU temporary-protection rule is the main pair-specific exception. It removes IDP and certified-translation requirements for qualifying holders of valid Ukrainian licences. Outside that regime, the 1968 Vienna Convention remains the core recognition basis. The Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine says a national licence used abroad should contain the internationally required identifying and category information and advises exchanging a licence that does not meet current international requirements.
For normal visitor driving, use the valid Ukrainian national licence and carry the original. An IDP is not generally a legal necessity for a convention-compliant licence, but it is a practical choice because the Ukrainian licensing authority recommends it and the Hertz and Avis policies checked require international driving documentation for non-EU licences. If renting with either company, carry both the national licence and the IDP.
