Sri Lanka ehliyeti ile Aruba ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Sri Lankan driving licence may be accepted for driving in Aruba, but definitive legal recognition has not been established from the official Aruba guidance checked. Whether an International Driving Permit (IDP) is legally required is also unverified. Sri Lanka issues a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, while some Aruba rental companies require an IDP for licences printed in non-Roman characters. No fixed visitor driving period was verified.
The practical distinction is between permission to drive under Aruba law and permission to collect a rental vehicle. Published rental terms confirm that foreign licences are used in Aruba, but they do not establish the complete legal position of every issuing country. A Sri Lankan visitor should obtain confirmation from the Aruba licensing authority before relying on the national licence alone.
For rental purposes, the language and script printed on the actual licence can determine whether additional documentation is requested. An IDP may help satisfy a company translation condition, but it is not a substitute for the national licence.
Sri Lanka and Aruba do not share a domestic driving-licence system. Aruba is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its own licensing administration. Dutch driving-licence arrangements therefore cannot automatically be applied to Sri Lankan licences.
The Aruba government identifies the Bureau Examen Rijbewijzen, or BER, within the Korps Politie Aruba as responsible for foreign-licence conversion and related licensing matters. The official material checked does not provide a definitive visitor recognition rule naming Sri Lanka or clearly establishing recognition of every foreign licence issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.
Consequently, recognition of a Sri Lankan national licence for independent driving remains unverified – confirm with official authority. Aruba publishes local licence categories A, B, C, D and E, including category B for ordinary passenger vehicles within its stated weight and seating limits. That classification does not by itself establish which Sri Lankan licence categories Aruba recognises for visiting drivers.
The Automobile Association of Ceylon issues Sri Lankan International Driving Permits under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic framework. Its official application guidance requires a valid Sri Lankan licence with at least one year of remaining validity when applying, or an official driving-licence extract for holders of older lifetime licences. It also instructs IDP holders to carry their original Sri Lankan licence abroad.
The Sri Lankan issuing model is therefore identifiable as the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. This does not, by itself, prove that Aruba legally requires that model or that possession of it automatically establishes a right to drive there.
Legal requirement: No sufficiently clear Aruba government rule was verified establishing whether a Sri Lankan visitor must carry an IDP. The legal position is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Official recommendation: No Aruba government recommendation specifically addressing IDPs for Sri Lankan licence holders was verified. Canadian and British government travel advice discusses IDPs for their respective travellers, but those nationality-specific instructions should not be presented as Sri Lankan legal requirements.
Translation: Avis and Sixt publish rental conditions requiring additional international driving documentation when the national licence uses a non-Roman alphabet. Whether Aruba law independently requires a certified translation of a Sri Lankan licence was not established.
No authoritative fixed maximum number of days was established for a visitor driving in Aruba with a Sri Lankan licence. A permitted immigration stay should not be treated automatically as an equivalent driving-licence recognition period.
Aruba has a separate procedure for converting foreign licences. The government instructs applicants to contact the Bureau Examen Rijbewijzen and provides requirements including a valid foreign licence, an original authenticity certificate from the issuing authority, proof of registration in the population register, identification and copies of relevant documents. A residence permit is also requested where applicable.
The government separately states that a Dutch licence cannot continue to be used once its holder becomes resident in Aruba. That specific Dutch-licence statement is not proof of an identical deadline for Sri Lankan licences. Whether a Sri Lankan licence can be exchanged, whether examinations are required and when resident driving entitlement changes must be confirmed directly with BER.
Rental operators have their own document, age and driving-experience conditions. The following published requirements were checked for Aruba. None is evidence of a general statutory IDP obligation.
| Rental company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Avis Aruba | Valid national licence. An IDP is required as a translation for a licence using a non-Roman alphabet. | Avis Aruba location rental information |
| Sixt Aruba | Full valid licence held for at least five years, passport or identity card, and international driving documentation for non-Roman-script licences. Digital licences and photocopies are not accepted. | Sixt Aruba rental information |
| Island Wheels Aruba | Valid home-country licence, identification and credit card. Its published FAQ states that an IDP is not required. Minimum driver age is 21 and the licence must have been held for at least one year. | Island Wheels Aruba FAQ |
These policies differ. In particular, a company stating that it does not require an IDP is not making a binding determination about Aruba law. Before booking, confirm that the operator accepts the specific Sri Lankan licence and any accompanying IDP.
The Automobile Association of Ceylon instructs drivers using its IDP abroad to carry the original Sri Lankan licence. Avis and Sixt also require original national driving documentation for rental collection, with identification requirements set out in their terms. An Aruba police checklist specifically for Sri Lankan visiting drivers was not verified.
Insurance must be assessed separately from licence recognition. Avis Aruba states that public liability protection follows local insurance law and that additional coverage conditions should be checked with the rental location. Aruba Top Drive publishes its own collision coverage, exclusions and authorised-driver conditions. Its terms state that an accident involving someone not listed as an authorised driver invalidates the relevant insurance protection.
No source checked establishes that every insurance policy becomes invalid merely because a Sri Lankan visitor lacks an IDP. A driver should instead obtain confirmation of both driving eligibility and the actual policy conditions from the relevant provider.
The clearest documented practical distinction concerns licence script. Rental companies applying non-Roman-alphabet rules may treat differently formatted Sri Lankan licences differently. The traveller should check the actual document rather than assume that all Sri Lankan licences have identical translation requirements.
Vehicle entitlement is another limit. Aruba identifies different local categories for motorcycles, ordinary cars, heavy vehicles and buses, but an automatic category-by-category equivalence with Sri Lankan licences was not verified. A Sri Lankan car licence should not be assumed to authorise every other vehicle type.
Rental age and licence-history conditions also vary. Sixt requires at least five years of licensing history, while Island Wheels publishes a one-year requirement. For residents, foreign-licence conversion is a separate administrative process, not an extension of a tourist rental policy.
The following sources were checked on 20 October 2026. Government and official issuing-body sources establish the administrative facts stated above. Rental-company sources establish only their respective commercial requirements.
Ask the Aruba Bureau Examen Rijbewijzen to confirm three points before departure: whether the Sri Lankan national licence is recognised for visitors, whether the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is legally required or accepted, and whether any time limit applies. The published sources do not resolve those questions conclusively.
If an IDP is needed for your circumstances, obtain it through the Automobile Association of Ceylon and carry it with the original national licence. For a rental booking, check the company policy against the language printed on your licence, your years of driving experience and the vehicle category you intend to use. Request written confirmation before committing to the rental.
This information was checked against the listed government, issuing-body and rental-company sources on 2026-10-20. The date records the source check, not a change in Aruba law. The unresolved legal recognition, IDP and visitor-period questions require confirmation from the responsible Aruba authority before driving.
