SIXT's Bahrain page says foreign drivers need an IDP, an original licence held for at least one year and a passport or ID. Next Plan Car Rental says an IDP is needed for licences in a non-Roman alphabet, subject to Bahrain Traffic approval. A Spanish licence uses Roman script, but Next Plan's wording is not an exemption from official approval. These are separate company policies, not national law.

Polis ve Denetim

Bahrain's foreign-international-licence stamping service requires the original national and international licences, a passport and residence information. Article 295 provides for Traffic review of foreign IDPs, with a limited tourist/transit presentation provision and possible approval by authorised rental firms. Australia's official Bahrain travel advice says drivers must carry their driving licence and vehicle registration card. No special Balearic Islands roadside exception was verified.

Sigorta Bilgileri

Next Plan says its rental vehicles have comprehensive insurance included and an excess that varies with vehicle group and driver age, and requires an accident report for an incident. SIXT says extra protection packages are optional. Neither statement establishes coverage under another firm's policy. Check the contract and licence/endorsement conditions before collection.

İstisnalar ve Özel Durumlar

The Balearic Islands are part of Spain, not a separate licence-issuing country. Spain is party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, and Bahrain acceded in 2025. Spain signed but has not ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention, so do not substitute a 1968-model assumption for the 1949 IDP issued by Spain. Bahrain's Article 251 authorisation applies to private cars, not an automatic recognition of every Spanish vehicle category. No Spain-specific resident exchange exemption was verified.

Tavsiyemiz

Apply through Spain's DGT for the 1949 Geneva IDP before travelling, and bring it with the valid original Spanish driving licence and passport. Ask Bahrain's General Directorate of Traffic or the rental branch to confirm and arrange the required endorsement before driving. For a stay approaching three months or a move to Bahrain, check the Bahraini licence procedure rather than assuming the Spanish permit continues to suffice.

Driving in Bahrain with a Balearic Islands Driving Licence: IDP Requirements and Rules

A Balearic Islands licence is a Spanish driving licence. Bahrain can authorise its use for private cars, but approval is not automatic. The national-licence route is limited to three months after entry. Spain advises carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP), and Bahrain's visitor-stamping service asks for one. A separate certified-translation obligation could not be established.

Quick answer

The practical route is to carry the Spanish licence and Spain-issued IDP and obtain Bahrain Traffic approval. Whether an IDP is mandatory in every legally permitted case depends on the approval route, not simply on the place where the Spanish licence was issued.

How Bahrain treats a Balearic Islands licence

The Balearic Islands are an autonomous community within Spain. Driving licences issued there belong to Spain's national system, administered by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). There is no separate Balearic Islands licensing treaty with Bahrain.

Article 251 of Bahrain's traffic regulations lets its General Directorate of Traffic approve private-car licences issued outside the Gulf Cooperation Council. This is discretionary, not blanket recognition. Spain's category B covers ordinary passenger cars, but wider Spanish categories are not automatically covered by that private-car approval.

IDP requirement, official advice and convention

Spain's DGT tells drivers travelling outside the EU and EEA to obtain and carry an IDP alongside their valid Spanish licence and passport. Bahrain's published visitor-stamping service likewise lists both an original international licence and an original private foreign licence. Nevertheless, Article 251 separately permits approved foreign national licences. It would therefore overstate the legislation to say that an IDP is the only possible legal route.

The relevant document from Spain is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, issued by the DGT. United Nations treaty records show that Spain is a party to the 1949 Convention and Bahrain joined it in 2025. Bahrain also belongs to the 1968 Vienna Convention, but Spain only signed that convention. The FIA IDP country records list Spain as issuing the 1949 model and Bahrain as accepting it.

An IDP translates licence information but does not replace the national licence. A separate Bahrain requirement for a certified translation of a Spanish licence is unverified – confirm with official authority.

Visitors and residents

Under Article 251, authorisation to drive a private car on a non-GCC national licence runs for at most three months from entry, whatever the holder's residence status. Beyond that period, the provision requires a Bahraini driving licence. Articles 294–295 separately address the validity and approval of foreign IDPs, so neither a one-year Spanish IDP nor a rental booking should be treated as extending Article 251.

For foreign IDPs, Article 295 calls for presentation to Traffic before use, but permits a tourist or transit driver to use one on arrival provided it is presented the next day. The authority may delegate IDP approval to rental companies. Bahrain has a foreign-licence evaluation and replacement service, but automatic exchange eligibility for this Spanish licence was not established.

Renting a car with the Spanish licence

Rental terms vary, and a firm's document rules cannot override Bahrain Traffic approval.

The Spanish licence's Roman lettering may satisfy Next Plan's language policy, but does not remove the government approval issue. Confirm the exact booking requirements before payment.

Authority documents and insurance

For the Bahraini endorsement procedure, the General Directorate of Traffic lists the original international and private foreign licences, a passport and residence information. Australian government travel advice also specifies carrying the driving licence and vehicle registration card when driving. Do not assume a digital Spanish licence is accepted in place of its original.

Next Plan states that comprehensive insurance is included in its rentals, with an excess depending on driver age and vehicle group, and that an accident report is required. SIXT offers optional additional protection. The insurance terms of other cars or rental agreements are not established by these examples.

Important limits and exceptions

The non-GCC licence approval described in Article 251 is for private cars, not a blanket permission for motorcycles, heavy vehicles or professional driving. The 1949 and 1968 treaties must not be conflated: Spain's issued IDP is the 1949 model. There is no verified special exemption for licences obtained in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera.

Practical recommendation

Obtain the 1949 Geneva IDP through Spain's DGT and keep it with the original Spanish licence and passport. Before driving, arrange or confirm Bahrain Traffic endorsement through the authority or an authorised rental desk. If you will remain longer or become resident, verify the Bahraini licensing route in advance.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

It is a Spanish driving licence. Bahrain Traffic can approve a valid foreign private-car licence for up to three months from entry, but approval is not automatic.

The published visitor-stamping procedure asks for an international permit and the original foreign licence. Bahrain law also provides a separate approval route for foreign national licences, so an IDP is not clearly the only possible legal route. Spain's DGT advises you to obtain and carry one.

The DGT issues the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Bahrain became a party to that convention in 2025 and its accepted-model listing includes 1949. The IDP must accompany the original Spanish licence.

A separate certified-translation obligation for a Spanish licence is unverified – confirm with official authority. The Spanish-issued IDP contains multilingual licence information and should travel with your national licence.

Article 251 limits use of an approved non-GCC private-car licence to three months from entry regardless of residence status. You must pursue a Bahraini licence for continued driving under that route. Automatic Spanish-licence exchange was not verified.

Do not assume so. SIXT Bahrain requires an IDP for foreign drivers, while Next Plan applies a different language-based rule subject to Bahrain Traffic approval. Check the booking conditions and endorsement before collecting the car.
