Puerto Rico ehliyeti ile Antigua and Barbuda ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A Puerto Rico driving licence is not enough on its own to drive legally in Antigua and Barbuda. A bona fide visitor must obtain a local temporary driver's licence, which may be issued for no more than three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required and official destination guidance says it is not recognized. AAA Puerto Rico still recommends IDPs for international travel generally, but an IDP does not replace the local licence.
For this origin-destination pair, the decisive document is the Antigua and Barbuda temporary visitor driver's licence. The Puerto Rico licence supports the application and rental process, while the local licence provides the authority to drive. Puerto Rico DTOP shows a bilingual English-Spanish licence format. A separate legal translation rule for this pair was not verified, so travellers should confirm this point with the official authority.
Section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act provides that a person must hold a driver's licence to drive a motor vehicle on a road. Section 40 permits a bona fide visitor to receive a temporary driver's licence, other than a chauffeur's licence, for a period not exceeding three months. The temporary licence can be issued with or without a local driving test and can carry conditions. This means the Puerto Rico licence does not operate as a stand-alone foreign licence exemption under the rule checked.
The Act does not provide automatic equivalence between Puerto Rico categories and Antigua and Barbuda categories. The local visitor licence controls what the visitor is authorized to drive, subject to any conditions written on it.
An IDP is not the document that authorizes a visitor to drive in Antigua and Barbuda. Government of Canada destination guidance expressly says the IDP is not recognized there and that a temporary local licence must be purchased using the national licence. U.S. Department of State guidance likewise says visitors are required to purchase a temporary driving permit.
AAA Puerto Rico generally recommends an IDP for international travellers. AAA also states that a licence issued by Puerto Rico, as a U.S. territory, can be supported by an IDP issued in the United States. The U.S. IDP is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework. United Nations treaty status does not list Antigua and Barbuda as a party to either the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna Road Traffic Convention, and the OAS 1943 Inter-American automotive traffic convention also does not list Antigua and Barbuda as a party. No convention-based IDP model therefore applies there as a substitute for the local visitor licence.
The statutory visitor licence may be granted for a period not exceeding three months. Because the source expresses the limit in months rather than a fixed number of days, this page does not convert it to a day count. The provision is specifically for a bona fide visitor. Once that status no longer applies, the visitor licence provision is not the basis for continued driving.
No Puerto Rico-specific resident licence exchange, testing exemption, or conversion deadline was verified. Resident treatment beyond the visitor provision is therefore unverified – confirm with official authority.
SunCars Rentals Antigua requires the original driving licence from the country of issue and a local driver's permit. Its published policy says an IDP is recommended but not required when a home licence is in a language such as Spanish and uses the Latin alphabet. Yolie's Car Rentals requires a valid original home-country licence and arranges the temporary local permit at pickup. These are named-company policies, not a statement that every rental company follows the same rules.
Section 41 of the Act requires a driver to produce the driver's licence when requested by a police officer. The section also provides that a driver who produces it in person within 48 hours at the specified police station is not charged under that section for the initial failure to produce it. No verified source checked requires an IDP to be produced to police.
No Puerto Rico-specific insurance rule was verified. Yolie's Car Rentals states contractually that failure to obtain the local temporary permit invalidates its insurance coverage. That is a rental-company condition and should not be presented as a general rule for every insurer.
The temporary visitor licence cannot be a chauffeur's licence and may contain conditions. The statutory visitor route is available only to a bona fide visitor. A Puerto Rico licence category does not automatically map to a local category under the sources checked. These limits matter more for this pair than an IDP, because the local visitor licence is the controlling authorization.
Bring the original current Puerto Rico licence and the identification required by the rental company, then obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary driver's licence before driving. Do not rely on an IDP as legal authority in Antigua and Barbuda. If you obtain a U.S. IDP for a wider itinerary, carry it only as a companion to the Puerto Rico licence and check each other destination separately.
