Poland ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Polish driving licence issued under the EU licensing system can be used in Greece. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for ordinary use of that valid EU licence, and a separate translation is not required. EU rules do not impose a fixed tourist driving period while the licence remains valid, although different rules can become relevant after taking up normal residence.
Poland and Greece are both EU Member States, so the central rule is EU mutual recognition of driving licences. This is why a holder of an ordinary valid Polish EU licence does not need an IDP merely to drive in Greece. The licence must be valid and must cover the category of vehicle being driven.
European Commission guidance states that a driving licence issued in an EU country can be used anywhere in the EU. The harmonised categories recognised throughout Europe include AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. The actual entitlement depends on the categories and restrictions recorded on the individual Polish licence.
This recognition does not extend in the same way to provisional driving licences or temporary certificates. The licence must also remain valid. An expired licence becomes invalid and may not be recognised abroad.
An IDP is not required for ordinary use of a valid Polish EU driving licence in Greece. Polish government guidance describes the International Driving Permit as a document for driving outside the European Union in countries covered by the Geneva or Vienna road-traffic conventions. Because this journey is within the EU and the Polish licence itself benefits from EU recognition, no IDP convention model is applicable to the ordinary Poland-to-Greece case.
No official recommendation to obtain an IDP for this EU-to-EU journey was identified. A separate translation is likewise unnecessary for an ordinary valid Polish EU licence recognised under the EU system.
No fixed maximum visitor period applies to the recognition rule identified for a valid Polish EU licence, so max_visitor_days is not expressed as a number. The licence can be used in another EU country while valid, subject to its recorded entitlements and applicable restrictions.
Taking up normal residence in Greece does not automatically make a valid Polish EU licence unusable. EU rules generally allow a person who moves to another EU country to continue using the EU licence and permit voluntary exchange. Greece also has an administrative procedure for exchanging an EU Member State licence for the corresponding Greek licence. Greek rules can require or govern exchange in circumstances such as expiry, certain older licences after residence conditions are met, or the application of driving penalties.
Legal recognition of the Polish licence does not guarantee that every rental company will apply identical contractual conditions. No named rental-company policy was verified for this pair. Check the selected company's current requirements for the physical licence, identification, licence validity, driver age, driving experience and payment documents before collection.
Carry the valid Polish driving licence used to establish your driving entitlement. There is no verified requirement for an ordinary Polish EU licence holder to add an IDP solely because the vehicle is being driven in Greece.
EU guidance states that compulsory third-party motor insurance issued in an EU country is valid throughout the EU. A vehicle's number plate normally serves as proof of liability insurance, but EU guidance recommends carrying insurance papers because they can make proof of coverage easier if an accident or roadside issue occurs. Optional insurance remains subject to the individual policy terms.
A Polish licence that was issued in exchange for a licence from a non-EU country requires extra care. EU guidance states that when an EU licence was obtained by exchanging a non-EU licence, another Member State may not be obliged to recognise it when the holder moves there. Provisional or temporary licences also do not receive the ordinary EU-wide recognition treatment. Vehicle entitlements remain limited to the categories and restrictions actually recorded on the licence.
Travel with the original valid Polish EU driving licence and confirm that its categories cover the vehicle you intend to drive. For an ordinary Polish EU licence, there is no need to obtain an IDP or translation solely for Greece. Check rental-company terms separately if hiring a vehicle. If the Polish licence resulted from exchanging a non-EU licence, verify its treatment before relying on the ordinary EU recognition rule.
This information was checked against the listed official and EU sources on 2026-09-28. Driving-licence, residence, rental and insurance requirements can change, so recheck the relevant authority or provider if your circumstances fall outside the ordinary valid Polish EU licence case.
