Peru ehliyeti ile New Zealand ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A person with a current and valid Peru driving licence can drive in New Zealand under the NZ Transport Agency overseas-licence rules. An IDP is not legally mandatory if the driver instead carries an acceptable English translation. For a non-English licence, one of those translation documents is required. A car licence can currently be used for up to 18 months from the last entry, with the limit changing to 12 months on 1 November 2026.
For this Peru to New Zealand pair, the practical position is yes for a valid licence, with a translation condition. The IDP is an accepted translation mechanism rather than the only legal route. Rental companies can apply stricter documentation rules than New Zealand law.
New Zealand and Peru are separate sovereign countries. NZTA allows holders of current and valid overseas licences to drive if they have not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand and have not been issued a New Zealand licence since their last entry. A full overseas car licence permits driving a car or light vehicle up to 6000 kg gross laden weight. A driver can only use vehicle classes that the overseas licence authorises.
Peru is not listed among NZTA's exempt countries for licence conversion. That does not stop a visitor using a valid Peru licence under the overseas-licence rules, but it matters if the driver later converts to a New Zealand licence.
New Zealand does not require an IDP as the only way to make a Peru licence usable. If the licence is not in English, NZTA requires an accurate English translation or an IDP. This means the IDP is legally optional when an acceptable translation is carried.
Touring y Automóvil Club del Perú states that its Permiso Internacional is the permit governed by the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, while its separate Inter-American permit is based on the 1943 Washington convention. The United Nations Treaty Collection lists both Peru and New Zealand as parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention. For travel from Peru to New Zealand, the relevant Touring permit is therefore the 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit, used together with the national licence.
NZTA does not publish a general recommendation that every overseas driver obtain an IDP. In this pair it is still a practical choice because it satisfies the translation rule and some rental companies require it.
The overseas-licence clock is tied to the driver's last entry into New Zealand rather than a simple visitor-versus-resident label. Through 31 October 2026, an overseas car licence may be used for up to 18 months from the last entry. From 1 November 2026 that car-licence period reduces to 12 months. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences can be used for up to 12 months.
A Peru licence holder who needs to convert a car licence follows the non-exempt-country process because Peru is not on NZTA's exempt list. NZTA requires non-exempt applicants to pass theory and practical tests. Once the applicant has passed the theory test and receives a New Zealand licence with a supervisor condition, the New Zealand licence overrides the overseas licence and the driver must follow the supervisor condition until passing the practical test.
Rental policy is separate from the legal right to drive. Avis New Zealand requires a full and valid licence from the renter's country of residence and says licences not printed in English must be accompanied by a valid IDP. Budget New Zealand publishes the same core requirement. These terms are stricter than the NZTA rule because NZTA also permits an approved English translation.
| Company | Published requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Avis New Zealand | Full valid licence and valid IDP for licences not printed in English | https://www.avis.co.nz/en/reservation-terms-conditions |
| Budget New Zealand | Full valid licence and valid IDP for licences not printed in English | https://www.budget.co.nz/en/reservation-terms-and-conditions |
NZTA says the driver must carry the current overseas licence while driving. If it is not in English, the driver must also carry the required English translation or IDP. This does not establish that police require an IDP specifically, because a qualifying translation is an alternative.
No Peru-specific statutory insurance condition was verified. Avis states that standard motor vehicle insurance is mandatory and included in New Zealand leisure rentals, but coverage, excesses and exclusions are contractual. Do not assume that an IDP by itself changes insurance validity.
The main exceptions are vehicle class, the upcoming time-limit change and conversion status. Motorcycle and truck licences remain on a 12-month overseas-licence limit. A full overseas car licence has the 6000 kg light-vehicle limit, while learner, restricted or provisional overseas licences can have lower limits. If a non-exempt conversion has progressed to a New Zealand licence with a supervisor condition, the overseas licence can no longer be used to avoid that condition.
Carry the current Peru licence and an accepted English translation or the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. For Avis or Budget rentals, obtain the IDP because their published New Zealand terms require it for a licence not printed in English. If the stay may extend beyond the overseas-licence limit, plan the non-exempt conversion process early.
This information was checked against the sources listed above on 2026-09-26. New Zealand's car-licence time limit is scheduled to change on 1 November 2026, so travellers entering near that date should recheck the NZTA rule before driving.
