Finland ehliyeti ile Antigua and Barbuda ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Finnish EU-model driving licence is accepted as the home licence for Antigua and Barbuda’s temporary visitor driving licence. Visitors need the local temporary licence, which may be issued for up to three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and no separate translation was verified as required for the EU-model card. If you choose an IDP, Finland’s issuer uses the 1968 Vienna model for Antigua.
The key extra step is the local temporary visitor licence. The Finnish licence supports that application, but it does not replace the local permit. Autoliitto lists both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna IDP models as accepted in Antigua, while also stating that the EU-model Finnish licence is accepted. The IDP is therefore optional for this pair, not the document that authorises the visitor to drive locally.
Section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act says a person may not drive a motor vehicle on a road unless they hold a driver licence. Section 40 then creates the visitor route by allowing the licensing authority to grant a temporary driver licence to a bona fide visitor for a period not exceeding three months. The licence can be subject to conditions and cannot be a chauffeur licence.
The destination tourism authority tells visitors to bring a valid driver licence from their home country and purchase a temporary local driver licence. Autoliitto’s country-specific guidance separately says an EU-model Finnish licence is accepted in Antigua and that the Finnish or international licence is to be presented to the local authority for the required formalities. Together, these sources support use of the Finnish licence as the underlying credential for the local visitor permit, not as a stand-alone right to drive without that permit.
An IDP is not legally required for a holder of the Finnish EU-model licence in the checked country-specific guidance. Autoliitto marks both the 1949 and 1968 IDP models as accepted rather than mandatory for Antigua. It also states that when both models are accepted for a destination, it issues only the 1968 model. That makes the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP the practical Finnish-issued model if you choose to carry one.
Traficom describes an IDP as an official translation of the national licence and says it often makes sense outside the EU or EEA. That is general travel advice rather than an Antigua-specific legal requirement. If an IDP is used, the national Finnish licence must still be carried with it.
The statutory visitor licence can be issued for any period up to three months, so the actual period is the period shown on the local licence and may be shorter. The section is expressly for a bona fide visitor. It does not establish a continuing entitlement after a person becomes resident.
Finland-specific resident exchange, conversion, testing or grace-period rules were not established from the checked authoritative sources. For that category, unverified – confirm with official authority before relying on the visitor permit after a change of residence.
Visit Antigua and Barbuda says rental-car users need a valid home-country driver licence and the temporary local driver licence, with the tourism site currently listing an EC$50 fee for the permit. It also notes that rental providers can assist with the process.
One named company was checked. J Will Car Rental requires a valid driver licence, described in its terms as local or international, held for at least two years and says a renter without an Antiguan licence must obtain an Antiguan Driving Permit. Its published terms list that permit at US$20 and valid for three months. The wording does not resolve whether a Finnish national licence is accepted without an IDP, so confirm directly and do not generalise this company’s policy.
Section 41 requires a driver to produce the driver licence when a police officer asks to examine it. If it is not produced immediately, the licence may instead be produced in person within 48 hours at the police station specified by the officer. For a visitor, carrying the local temporary licence together with the original Finnish licence is the clearest way to document both the local authority to drive and the foreign licence on which it was issued.
No general insurance condition tied specifically to a Finnish licence or to possession of an IDP was verified. J Will’s terms state that comprehensive insurance is included with its rentals and that its collision damage waiver operates only while the vehicle is used within the rental agreement. That is a company contract term, not a nationwide rule.
The visitor licence under section 40 cannot be a chauffeur licence and may include conditions imposed by the licensing authority. Autoliitto also notes origin-specific category limits: Finnish category AM is only valid in Finland and other EU or EEA states, while T and LT are national categories that cannot be entered on an IDP. Those categories should not be assumed to create a driving entitlement in Antigua and Barbuda. For other categories, the local temporary licence and its conditions control what the visitor may drive.
Take the original Finnish driving licence and obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary visitor licence before driving. An IDP is optional for this licence pair. If you want one as an additional multilingual document, obtain the 1968 Vienna model from Autoliitto and carry it with the national licence. Confirm the specific rental company’s current document rules before booking.
The information on this page was checked against the sources listed above on 2026-10-06. Driving-licence and rental policies can change, so recheck the local permit process if your trip is well after this date.
