El Salvador ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid El Salvador driving licence can be recognised in Greece for a holder who is not normally resident there, provided the licence conforms to Annex 6 of the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. In that case an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required by the Greek rule. If the national licence does not meet Annex 6, a valid 1968 Convention IDP used with the national licence is a separately recognised route. No fixed visitor-day limit was verified.
El Salvador became bound by the 1968 Vienna Convention on 27 August 2025. Greece recognises qualifying Convention-format national permits for people who are not normally resident and also recognises valid IDPs when accompanied by the national licence. Rental terms can be stricter than the legal minimum, and the named companies checked require an IDP for this origin or for non-EU licences.
The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport circular Δ30/Α3/76710 of 13 May 2026 states that a holder of a valid national licence issued by a Vienna Convention Contracting State may drive in Greece when the holder does not have normal residence in Greece and the licence conforms to Annex 6. The current United Nations treaty record shows El Salvador acceded to the Convention on 27 August 2024 and that it entered into force for El Salvador on 27 August 2025. Greece is also a Contracting Party. Recognition covers only vehicle categories for which the permit is valid. Exact mapping of Salvadoran category labels to Convention categories was not separately verified.
An IDP is conditional rather than a blanket legal requirement. When the Salvadoran national licence itself conforms to Annex 6, the Greek rule recognises it without an IDP for a person who is not normally resident. Greek guidance separately recognises a valid IDP issued outside Greece only when it is accompanied by the valid national licence. For the El Salvador to Greece treaty relationship, the applicable convention model is the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP under Annex 7. A blanket official recommendation that every Salvadoran visitor obtain an IDP was not verified. Rental-company requirements provide a separate practical reason to carry one.
The verified recognition rule is tied to normal residence rather than a fixed number of visitor days, so there is no verified fixed maximum to store. Once Greece becomes the normal residence of the holder, the visitor recognition rule described above no longer applies. The 2026 Greek circular lists bilateral licence-recognition arrangements with Switzerland, Serbia, Albania, the United Arab Emirates, Moldova and Georgia, not El Salvador. The exact Greek licensing or conversion route after normal residence for an El Salvador licence holder is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policy is stricter than the legal minimum at the companies checked. Enterprise Greece requires a valid IDP plus the national licence for countries outside its published exemption lists, and El Salvador is not in those lists. SIXT Greece states that licences issued outside the EU must be complemented by an international driving licence. Both also require a full valid licence and publish identity-document and licence-holding-period conditions. These are company terms rather than Greek driving law, and other rental companies may set different requirements.
For the Convention national-licence route, the operative driving document is the valid Salvadoran licence. When an IDP is used, Greek ministry guidance says it is valid only together with the national licence. Enterprise and SIXT require an identity card or passport at rental pickup, but that is a rental-document condition rather than evidence of a separate roadside police rule. Pair-specific insurance consequences tied to IDP or foreign-licence status are unverified – confirm with official authority.
The static Table 4 attached to the May 2026 Greek circular does not list El Salvador among Vienna Convention states. The same circular expressly says that the up-to-date list should be checked on the official United Nations treaty site. That live record shows El Salvador as a party, with accession on 27 August 2024 and entry into force on 27 August 2025. The current Salvadoran licence format was not independently verified for Annex 6 conformity, so a traveller relying on the national licence alone should confirm that point before driving.
For a short visit, bring the original valid Salvadoran licence. If its conformity with Annex 6 is confirmed, the Greek legal rule permits use without an IDP while Greece is not the normal residence of the holder. Because the named rental companies checked require an IDP for this origin or for non-EU licences, obtaining a valid 1968 Convention IDP before travel is the practical choice when renting. Use only an issuer authorised for El Salvador and carry the national licence with the IDP. The official Salvadoran IDP issuing body was not verified in the sources checked.
