Canary Islands ehliyeti ile Bahrain ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A Canary Islands licence is a Spanish driving licence. Bahrain can approve it for private-car driving, but recognition is conditional on its traffic authority’s approval. A Spanish International Driving Permit (IDP) is the practical route, and Spain’s DGT instructs travellers to carry one outside the EU/EEA. An approved foreign national licence can be used for up to three months from entry. Bahrain applies separate rules to foreign IDPs.
Do not assume that an unendorsed Spanish licence is sufficient. Bahrain’s published visitor stamping service specifies both the original foreign private-car licence and a valid foreign IDP, while its regulations also allow approval of national private-car licences.
The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, not a separate driving-licence jurisdiction. The relevant document is therefore the Spanish licence issued under the national DGT system. Article 251 of Bahrain’s implementing traffic regulations allows its General Directorate of Traffic to approve private-car licences from non-Gulf Cooperation Council countries for temporary driving. Approval is discretionary, not automatic, and no Canary Islands-specific exemption was identified.
Articles 294 and 295 recognise valid foreign IDPs for the vehicle categories they authorise. Article 295 requires an overseas IDP to be presented to the traffic authority for review and registration. Tourists and transit travellers may use it upon arrival but must present it on the following day. The authority can authorise rental firms to validate these permits. This is a Bahrain procedure, distinct from the DGT’s instruction to obtain and carry an IDP abroad.
Spain issues an IDP based on the 1949 Geneva Convention. Both Spain and Bahrain are parties, with Bahrain’s 1949 accession taking effect in April 2025. Bahrain is also party to the 1968 Vienna Convention, but Spain signed that treaty without becoming a party. The Spanish IDP is valid for one year and must accompany the original Spanish licence and passport.
For a non-GCC private-car licence approved under Article 251, the maximum is three calendar months after entry, including where the holder’s immigration status differs. Driving under that national-licence approval after the period requires obtaining a Bahraini driving licence. Article 294 separately addresses foreign IDPs for their period of validity and does not make the three-month national-licence limit a universal IDP limit.
Anyone establishing residence should contact the General Directorate of Traffic about local licensing rather than assume that visitor approval or an IDP can substitute indefinitely. Bahrain publishes a foreign-licence evaluation service requiring the original licence, a vision test and other eligibility checks. Automatic exchange of a Canary Islands-issued Spanish licence was not verified.

These are company conditions, not statements of Bahraini driving law. Confirm the branch’s treatment of a Spanish-language licence and the permit validation process before booking.
The official stamping service lists the valid original national private-car licence, the original international permit, a passport and residence information. Carry the originals and any approval obtained from the traffic authority. Neither the service nor the provisions checked establish a universal roadside document checklist specifically for Spanish visitors.
Bahrain’s vehicle registration renewal service requires at least third-party insurance. It does not establish that any particular foreign driver is automatically covered under a rental agreement. Check the policy and the named-driver terms before driving.
Article 251 concerns the private-car class, not every category appearing on a Spanish licence. Article 252 disallows driving under a foreign-issued special private-transport licence. An IDP can support only the vehicle classes it expressly authorises. A separate Bahrain requirement for an officially certified translation of a Spanish licence is unverified – confirm with official authority. Europcar’s language-based IDP rule is its own rental policy.
Obtain the DGT-issued 1949 Geneva IDP before departing the Canary Islands and take it with your original Spanish licence and passport. Ask Bahrain’s General Directorate of Traffic or the authorised rental counter exactly how and when to present the permit for endorsement, including the next-day requirement for tourists. For stays or residency beyond national-licence approval, arrange local licensing before continuing to drive.
