Bahrain ehliyeti ile New Zealand ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
Bahrain and New Zealand are two independent countries. A Bahrain-issued driver licence is treated as an overseas licence under New Zealand law. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi sets the rules. Because most Bahrain licences are not written entirely in English, an IDP or approved translation is required alongside the original licence. The current visitor window for car licences is 18 months from last entry.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi states that a current and valid overseas licence allows driving without a New Zealand licence provided the holder has not been disqualified or suspended in New Zealand and has not been issued a New Zealand licence since last entering the country. A full Bahrain car licence authorises cars or light vehicles with gross laden weight up to 6000 kg, matching New Zealand class 1. If the licence is not in English the driver must also carry either an accurate English translation or an international driving permit. The translation may come from an NZTA-approved translator, a diplomatic representative, or the authority that issued the licence. An IDP issued in accordance with a United Nations Convention on Road Traffic is accepted as a translation. The original Bahrain licence must always be carried with the IDP or translation.
Under NZTA rules an IDP is legally required when the Bahrain licence is not in English, unless an approved English translation is carried instead. New Zealand accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention or the 1968 Vienna Convention. New Zealand itself is a party to the 1949 Convention; Bahrain is a party to the 1968 Convention. The IDP may be current or expired by up to six months for car licences, but the underlying Bahrain licence must remain current. An IDP alone is never sufficient; the original licence must accompany it. NZTA does not issue IDPs to overseas visitors, so the document must be obtained in Bahrain before travel. Carrying an IDP is the practical recommendation even though a separate approved translation would also satisfy the legal requirement.
NZTA currently allows driving on an overseas car licence for up to 18 months from the last date of entry into New Zealand. Motorcycle and truck licences remain limited to 12 months. From 1 November 2026 the car-licence period reduces to 12 months for new arrivals. The period restarts if the driver leaves New Zealand and re-enters. After the time limit the driver must convert to a New Zealand licence or stop driving. Conversion is possible if the overseas licence is still current or has expired less than 12 months earlier.
Rental policy is separate from the law. Operators such as Hertz, Avis and Budget require a full unrestricted licence held for at least 12 consecutive months. For licences not printed in English they require an International Driving Permit or an NZTA-approved English translation to be shown with the original licence at collection. Learner, restricted or provisional licences are normally refused. Age minima of 21 or 25 apply depending on the company and vehicle type. Always confirm the exact terms with the chosen operator before booking.
Drivers must carry the current overseas licence at all times. When the licence is not in English the IDP or approved translation must also be produced on request. NZTA advises that driving beyond the visitor time limit without converting can lead to police action and may result in insurance claims being declined. Specific insurance outcomes for Bahrain licence holders remain a matter for the individual policy or rental agreement.
Motorcycle and heavy-vehicle licences are capped at 12 months regardless of the car-licence extension. Weight and class limits on a Bahrain licence are interpreted against New Zealand class definitions; if the overseas limits are higher the New Zealand limits apply. The blood-alcohol limit is 50 mg per 100 ml for drivers aged 20 and over and zero for those under 20. New Zealand has no nationwide winter-tyre rule, though temporary restrictions can appear on alpine routes. Toll roads are camera-operated with free alternative routes available. There is no special bilateral driving agreement between Bahrain and New Zealand; recognition rests solely on New Zealand’s overseas-licence rules.

Get a 1949 or 1968 Convention IDP from the authorised issuer in Bahrain before departure. Carry both the original Bahrain licence and the IDP every time you drive. Check the arrival date against the 18-month rule, remembering the reduction scheduled for 1 November 2026. When hiring a car present the documents at the counter and confirm any company-specific age or experience conditions. If the stay will exceed the visitor period, begin the conversion process to a New Zealand licence in good time.
